GLASSBORO, NJ – Forward Alyssa Thren scored four goals to lead third ranked Ursinus College to a 5-4 victory over 15th ranked Rowan University on Wednesday night.
Rowan was ahead, 3-1 after the first half. Thren (sr. Barto, PA/Upper Perkiomen) cut the deficit to one (3-2) with an unassisted goal at 45:08. Forward Corinne Freeman (sr. Freehold, NJ/St. John Vianney) hit the left side of the cage on a feed from Thren at 47:16 to make the score, 3-3. Rowan forward Julie Cairone (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) answered with an unassisted goal 1:35 later. The game was tied (4-4), after Thren scored off her own rebound at 56:39. With 6:50 remaining, Thren found the left side of the cage off a rebounded shot.
The Bears are 2-0, while the Profs have 2-1 record. Thren scored the tying and game-winning goals. She also picked up one assist. Freeman registered one goal.
For Rowan, forwards Marisa Schoepflin (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), Katie Griffis (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), back Lauren Conner (sr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) and Cairone tallied one goal apiece. Midfielders Ashley Adams (sr. Erial, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) and Erin Bernat (jr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) and forward Rachael Dix (sr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) all had one assist.
Ursinus took 22 shots, while Rowan had 28. Bears’ goalie Jill Lukens (sr. Furlong, PA/C.B. East) made 16 saves. Goalie Lisa Apt (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) stopped 12 shots in the Profs’ cage.
Conner tipped in a shot from Bernat at 3:15 in the first period to give Rowan a 1-0 lead. Thren tied the game (1-1) after she put in a rebound off a penalty corner at the 10 minute mark. Schoepflin scored on a cross from Adams at 15:52. Griffis added a goal off a rebounded shot by Dix at 21:16 to give the Profs a 3-1 halftime advantage.
Rowan hosts Messiah College on Saturday, September 10 at 1 p.m.
