Eastern Upsets Eighth Ranked Rowan, 5-4 In Overtime

ST. DAVIDS, PA – The Eastern University field hockey team upset eighth ranked Rowan University, 5-4 in overtime on Thursday.  The Eagles ended the Profs’ five-game win streak.  

Forward Abby Wagner (so. Glen Rock, PA/Susquehannock) scored the game winner at 2:32 into the first overtime.  Midfielder Kelby Bolton (jr. Souderton, PA/Christopher Dock) assisted on the goal.  Eastern is 4-4 on the season while Rowan has a 7-3 record. 

Wagner finished the game with two goals and one assist.  Forward Brittany Moyer (jr. Telford, PA/Christopher Dock) chipped in with two goals and forward Yvonne Herbster (sr. Middleburg, PA/Midd-West) added one.

For the Profs, forward Brittany Phillips (sr. Williamstown, NJ/Delsea Reg.) scored twice.  Forward Julie Cairone (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and midfielder Ashley Adams (sr. Erial, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) contributed with one goal apiece.  Forward Katie Griffis (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) had an assist.

Eastern had a total of 13 shots and Rowan collected 17.  Goalie Christin Suetterlein (jr. Bear, DE/Red Lion Christian) made six saves for the Eagles.  Goalie Jen Goldberg (jr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) turned away six shots.

The score was 2-2 after the first half.  Adams put Rowan ahead 3-2 at 37:18 with an unassisted goal off a penalty corner.  Moyer tied the score at 46:42.  She deflected a pass from Wagner into the cage.  Herbster put the Eagles up (57:20) with an unassisted goal.  With 5:53 remaining, Phillips had the tying goal with an assist from Griffis.

Wagner scored the first goal of the game at 21:39 unassisted.  Phillips tied the score, 3:22 later when she knocked in the ball off a deflection.  Moyer put Eastern ahead at 29:17.  Carione’s goal came on a penalty stroke (32:35) to end the period.

Rowan’s next game is at home against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Saturday, October 1 at 6 p.m.
