MAHWAH, NJ – The Rowan University men’s track and field team took second place at the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championships and the women finished third overall. The conference championships were held at Ramapo College.
Demetrius Rooks (so. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) won the 400 meter hurdles with a NCAA automatic of 52.63. His time also broke the conference championship record of 52.64 that was held by Montclair State University’s Amod Field from 1989. The NCAA automatic qualifier for the 400 meter hurdles is 52.65. Previous, Rooks ran a NCAA provisional in the 400 meter hurdles (52.82) at the Penn Relays. He also had a winning time of 48.19 in the 400 meters that was better than the NCAA provisional (48.50). His time surpassed his previous provisional of 48.34 at the Pennsylvania Invitational.
Pierre James (so. Somerset, NJ/Franklin) won the shot put and the discus with throws of 52’ 4” (15.95 meters) and 150’ 3.5” (45.81 meters) respectively. His distance in the shot put was a NCAA provisional (50’ 10.75”) and is better than the one (51’ 11.5”) he had at the Rowan Open. Jayce Maxwell (jr. Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) ran a winning time of 21.99 in the 200 meters. He also took second (49.00) in the 400 meters. Stephen Mennitt (so. Edison, NJ/Edison) came in first in the 10,000 meters (33:07.39).
On the women’s side, Jena Peacock (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Our Lady of Mercy Academy) was the winner in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:10.79 and Danielle Czohla (jr. Lafayette, NJ/High Point Reg.) came in second (11:48.70). Peacock also had a sixth place (4:54.51) in the 1500 meters and Czohla was sixth (19:28.19) in the 5000 meters. Jamie Thompson (fr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/South Brunswick) leaped 17’ 6.5” (5.34 meters) in the long jump for first place. She was also fifth (15.74) in the 100 meter hurdles.
The men’s 4x400 meter relay ran 3:15.14 for first place. The Profs’ time was a NCAA provisional (3:16.40). Maxwell, Taylor Purdue (so. Highland Lakes, NJ/Vernon Twp.), Ali Ejaz (so. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) and Rooks were on the 4x400. The 4x100 meter relay finished second (42.83) with Josh McGriff (so. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Reg.), Brandon Taylor (so. Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown), Marcus Rawls (fr. North Brunswick, NJ/Florence Twp. Mem.) and Brian Oni (fr. Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick).
Eric DuBois (jr. Pilesgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick) had a second place (15:42.41) in the 5000 meters. He also came in fifth (4:08.53) in the 1500 meters. Brian Makinson (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) and Joe (Giuseppe) Mineo tied for second (6’ 0”, 1.83 meters) in the high jump.
In the long jump, Kyle Hayes (sr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) took second (22’ 7.75”, 6.90 meters) followed by Mark Lisa (jr. Highland Lakes, NJ/Vernon Twp.) third (22’ 3.5”, 6.79 meters). Frank Visconti (so. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) tossed the shot put, 46’ 10.25” (14.28 meters) for third place.
In the 10,000 meters, Jake McCormack (jr. Cliffwood, NJ/Matawan Reg.) was third (33:19.01) followed by Jeff Terebey (sr. Shamong, NJ/Seneca) fourth (33:28.24). Oni took third (11.21) in the 100 meters. Benjamin Bradley (sr. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) finished fourth (16.26) in the 110 meter hurdles and Purdue had a fifth place (50.04) in the 400 meters.
Mike Carotenuto (so. Port Monmouth, NJ/Middletown N.) came in sixth (1:58.83) in the 800 meters and ninth (4:14.43) in the 1500 meters. In the 400 meter hurdles, Ejaz and Bradley were fifth (55.59) and seventh (57.93) respectively. Steven Iafrate (fr. Closter, NJ/Demarest) finished sixth in the javelin with a toss of 190’ 9.5” (58.15 meters).
Heidi DeGuzman (jr. Central Islip, NY/Pennsauken) had a second place (12.52) in the 100 meters and she was third (26.46) in the 200 meters. Tiffany Chamberlain (so. Burlington, NJ/BurlingtonTwp.) came in second (1:03.11) in the 400 meter hurdles. Jacqui Nisbett (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury) took third (15.19) in the 100 meter hurdles and seventh (1:06.67) in the 400 meter hurdles. Joy Hanke (so. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) ran 41:34.67 in the 10,000 meters for third place.
The women’s 4x100 meter relay finished fourth in 49.37. The relay included DeGuzman, Amirah Muneer (jr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing), Beverlee Brownlee (so. Mt. Holly, NJ/Willingboro) and Thompson. Muneer was fifth (26.65) and sixth (1:00.12) in the 200 and 400 meter respectively. Jenn Rawls (so. Runnemede, NJ/Highland Reg.) came in fifth (4:53.03) in the 1500 meters while Grace Kaler (fr. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) and Kayla Warren (so. Gibbsboro, NJ/Eastern Reg.) were eighth (5:12.13) and ninth (5:15.73) respectively. Meghan Borz (fr. Buena, NJ/Buena Reg.) captured fifth places in the 3000 meter steeplechase (12:17.77) and the 5000 meters (19:26.80). Ashley White (so. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) came in seventh (20:20.12) in the 5000 meters. Samantha Stapleton (fr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) was eighth (2:25.18) in the 800 meters followed Rawls ninth (2:25.63).
In the field events, Tempeste Johnson (jr. Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) threw 111’ 10” (34.08 meters) in the discus for third place and Emily Spieker (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) came in fifth (107’ 3”, 32.68 meters). Spieker also had a fifth place (130’ 10.5”, 39.89 meters) in the hammer. Jessica Carlson (fr. Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.) captured third (35’ 4.5”, 10.78 meters) in the triple jump and she was eighth (15’ 9.75”, 4.82 meters) in the long jump. Kayla Leahey (fr. Keansburg, NJ/Warwick Valley) took fourth (10’ 2”, 3.10 meters) in the pole vault and Sarah Dores (fr. Maple Shade, NJ/Holy Cross) was fourth (126’ 1”, 38.44 meters) in the javelin. Magan Kustera (fr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) tied for fourth (5’ 0.25”, 1.53 meters) in the high jump.
Next week, Rowan travels to the Swarthmore College Last Chance Meet on Saturday, May 16. The field events start at 4 p.m. and the track events begin at 5 p.m.
