DELAWARE, OH – The Rowan University men’s 4x400 meter relay won the national title at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday. The national championships were held at Ohio Wesleyan University.
The 4x400 meter relay had a winning time of 3:11.45 with Jayce Maxwell (jr. Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan), Taylor Purdue (so. Highland Lakes, NJ/Vernon Twp.), Ali Ejaz (so. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) and Demetrius Rooks (so. Galloway, NJ/Absegami). Rooks also came in second in the 400 meter hurdles in 51.98 for All-America honors. In the team scoring, Rowan finished tied for 12th place with 18 points.
On Thursday, Rowan advanced to the final of the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:13.03 in the trails. Rooks ran 52.29 in the trails to move on to the 400 meter hurdles final. The 4x400 meter relay qualified for nationals with a NCAA provisional of 3:14.34. Rooks had a NCAA automatic (52.34) in the 400 meter hurdles.
In his first national championship, Steven Iafrate (fr. Closter, NJ/Demarest) took ninth place in the javelin. He threw 202’ 6” (61.72 meters). The javelin was won by Moravian’s Gary Zack with 221’ (67.37 meters). Iafrate qualified for nationals with a NCAA provisional of 200’ 11” (61.24 meters).
Jenn Rawls (so. Runnemede, NJ/Highland Reg.) had a 12th place in the 5000 meters with a time of 17:48.85. Williams’ Jennifer Gossels was the winner in the 5000 meters in 17:06.76. It was Rawls’ second straight year at the NCAA Championships. This season, she recorded a NCAA provisional of 17:17.06.
In the 4x400 meter relay, McMurry took second (3:11.50) followed by North Central third (3:11.64). Wis.-La Crosse and Wis.-Stevens Point were fourth (3:11.84) and fifth (3:13.06) respectively. Nebraska Wesleyan was sixth (3:13.20), Wis.-Whitewater seventh (3:13.65) and Heidelberg eighth (3:14.64). McMurry’s Kevin Cunningham was the winner in the 400 meter hurdles in 51.00.
North Central (IL) won the men’s team title with 58 points followed by Wis.-La Crosse with 56. Rounding out the top five were McMurry, third (50); Washington University, fourth (34) and La Verne, fifth (33). The women’s team championship was won by Wis.-Oshkosh with 80 points while Wartburg and Methodist were second (59) and third (48) respectively. MIT finished fourth (45) and Williams was fifth (36).
