Rowan Starts Outdoor Track Season At Wake Forest Open

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Rowan University men’s and women’s track teams started the outdoor season at the Wake Forest Open on Friday. The two-day meet continues on Saturday at Wake Forest University.

Joe (Giuseppe) Mineo (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) won the men’s high jump B with a height of 6’ 5” (1.96 meters) which was a career best. His performance was better than the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships qualifier of 6’4” (1.93 meters). Josh McGriff (so. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Reg.) tied for fifth place (6’ 1.25”, 1.86 meters) while Brian Makinson (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) tied for seventh (5’ 11.25”, 1.81 meters).

Steven Iafrate (fr. Closter, NJ/Demarest) threw the javelin 197’ 6” (60.21 meters) for ninth place. He surpassed the ECAC qualifier (179’ 1”, 54.60 meters) and recorded a NCAA provisional (193' 3", 58.90 meters). His first four throws were all NCAA provisionals. Iafrate is currently fourth among national qualifiers in the javelin. Eric DuBois (jr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick) came in ninth (15:35.63) in the 5000 meters. Brian Quilty (sr. Brick, NJ/Saint Rose) took 13th place (15:57.41) while Jeff Terebey (sr. Shamong, NJ/Seneca) and Jake McCormack (jr. Cliffwood, NJ/Matawan Reg.) were 21st (16:23.48) and 27th (16:42.34) respectively.  Brandon Taylor (so. Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) took 23rd place in the 100 meters in 11.00. Jayce Maxwell (jr. Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) was 27th (49.98) in the 400 meters.

Jamie Thompson (fr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/South Brunswick) finished 13th in the women’s 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.97. She advances to the final on Saturday. Her time was an ECAC qualifier (16.34). In the triple jump, Jessica Carlson (fr. Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.) took 18th place with a distance of 35’ 11.25” (10.95 meters).

Joy Hanke (so. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) was 13th (42:57.51) in the 10000 meters. Jena Peacock (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Our Lady of Mercy Academy) came in 23rd (2:20.89) in the 800 meters and Samantha Stapleton (fr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) was 28th (2:21.89). Meghan Borz (fr. Buena, NJ/Buena Reg.) was 28th in the 5000 meters with a time of 20:06.34.
