HOBOKEN, NJ – The Rowan University field hockey team won 7-5 at Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday evening.
The Profs, ranked 17th in the nation, have an 11-5 record while the Ducks are 8-6 on the season. Rowan had goals from six different players. Forward Julie Cairone (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) scored twice. Forwards Marisa Schoepflin (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), Rachael Dix (sr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) and Brittany Phillips (sr. Williamstown, NJ/West Deptford), midfielder Laura DiMenna (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) and back Janice Camlin (sr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) each hit the cage one time. Midfielder Ashley Adams (sr. Erial, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) chipped in with three assists and Schoepflin added one.
Stevens midfielder Mallory Swanson (sr. Princeton Jct., NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.) scored two goals while back Megan Traub (so. Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) contributed with one goal and two assists. Forward Mary Nikish (jr. Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) tallied one goal and one assist. Forward Marguerite Chavez (so. Oceanport, NJ/Shore Reg.) scored one time. Forward Rachel Chavez (so. Oceanport, NJ/Shore Reg.) and midfielder Jillian Price (sr. West Islip, NY/West Islip) had one assist apiece.
Rowan collected 15 shots while Stevens registered 20. Goalie Jen Goldberg (jr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) made nine saves in 67:09 for the Profs. Goalie Lisa Apt (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) played 2:51. For the Ducks, goalie Gabriella Sanchez (fr. Auburn, NH/Manchester Mem.) had two saves in the first half. Goalie Meg Collins (jr. Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) turned away one shot in the second.
The Profs started the game with four straight goals. DiMenna had the first at 3:54 when she knocked in a cross from Adams. Cairone’s first goal was unassisted at 5:32. She slapped in a loose ball. Schoepflin scored 1:24 later on a pass from the right side by Adams. At 15:26, Dix hit the cage with an assist from Adams. Marguerite Chavez put Stevens on the scoreboard at 19:26 on a centering pass by Rachel Chavez. Phillips ended the first half scoring at 20:49. She tapped in a rebound after a save.
In the second period, the Ducks trailed 5-4 after three unanswered goals. Swanson had the first at 36:19 and Nikish assisted. Nikish and Swanson scored at 37:51 and 43:11 respectively. Traub had the assist on both goals. Camlin put the Profs up 6-4 (52:05) and Traub followed with a goal (53:26). Cairone’s second goal came with 6:51 remaining. She deflected a shot by Schoepflin.
Rowan plays at home on Friday, October 21 against conference opponent Kean University at 7 p.m.
