MORRISVILLE, NY – Running back Steve Hevalow rushed for 95 yards and two touchdowns to lead Rowan University to a 36-17 win over Morrisville State College in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.
The Profs are 4-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference. The Mustangs have a 1-5 record with a 1-4 NJAC mark. Hevalow (sr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) carried the ball 25 times. Quarterback Louie Bianchini (so. West Long Branch, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) completed 12 of 21 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Dan Reed (so. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.) had six receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown. Wideout Eddie Eisenhart (fr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) added 59 yards and a touchdown with two catches.
Linebacker Dean Hammel (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) registered 10 tackles (two solo, eight assisted), two fumble recoveries and one pass breakup. Linebackers Daniel Ashley (jr. Sicklerville, NJ/Rancho Cucamonga (CA)) and Geno Raman (sr. Mullica Hill, NJ/N. Kingstown (RI)), defensive tackle Steve Williams (jr. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.) and defensive end Chris Alvarez (fr. Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park) all produced seven tackles. Williams and Alvarez each had two tackles for a loss, while Ashley recorded a sack (-5 yards). Safety Jack Buckley (sr. Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) intercepted two passes and linebacker Patrick Ruley (jr. Margate, NJ/Atlantic City) had one pick. Ruley and Alvarez both forced a fumble.
For the Mustangs, quarterback Lemar Johnson (so. Ossining, NY/Ossining) had nine completions in 23 attempts for 122 yards. He added 42 yards rushing on 13 carries. Tailback Sam Stonerock (fr. Hornell, NY/Hornell) ran for 31 yards and two touchdowns on 17 touches. Wide receiver Josh Powell (so. Yonkers, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) had two grabs for 43 yards.
Linebacker TJ Barnaba (fr. Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) compiled 10 tackles (two solo, eight assisted). Defensive back Jeremy Stewart (so. Moravia, NY/Moravia) followed with nine stops (six solo, three assisted), one tackle for a loss (-1 yard) and one pass breakup. Linebacker Travis French (so. Newark Valley, NY/Newark Valley) forced a fumble and recovered one. Linebacker Dondre Bailey (fr. Central Islip, NY/Central Islip) and defensive lineman Josh Whitehead (so. Oneonta, NY/Milford Academy) chipped in with one forced fumble apiece and defensive tackle Jack Glen (jr. Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) had one recovery.
On the third play of the game, Ruley forced a fumble and Hammel recovered the ball, then ran 26 yards for a touchdown to give Rowan a 7-0 lead at 13:24. Profs’ kicker Tommy Wilczynski (so. Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) made a 25 yard field goal at 1:36. Buckley’s interception gave Rowan the ball on the Morrisville State 38 yard line. Hevalow had three carries for 13 yards and Bianchini added two completions for 13 yards and a 13 yard run.
Hevalow found the end zone on a one yard run at 11:30 in the second period. The Profs started on the Mustangs’ 40 yard line after Morrisville State turned the ball over on downs. Two personal foul penalties and a 16 yard catch by Reed set up the touchdown. At 9:22, Stonerock scored with a two yard touchdown carry. Johnson threw for 19 yards with two completions (four attempts). Stonerock’s second rushing touchdown was from one yard out at 6:09 to make the score, 16-14. Whitehead forced a fumble and French recovered it on the Profs’ 40 yard line. Johnson threw a nine yard pass to Stonerock and two penalties gave Morrisville State the ball on the one. Mustangs’ kicker Juan Rios (so. Grahamsville, NY/Tri-Valley) connected on a 21 yard field goal with seven seconds remaining to give Morrisville State a 17-16 halftime advantage. Glen recovered a fumble that was forced by French on the Rowan 43 yard line. Johnson had a 16 yard throw and a nine yard run prior to the kick.
Rowan scored 20 unanswered points in the third quarter. Bianchini had an 11 yard touchdown pass to Reed at 12:02. Hevalow carried the ball three times for 13 yards, while running back Keith Corcoran (jr. Atlantic City, NJ/St. Joseph (Hammonton)) had three touches for nine yards. Hevalow’s nine yard touchdown rush at 10:36 made the score, 30-17. Tight end Chris Garcia (jr. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) blocked a punt and Raman recovered it on the Mustangs’ nine yard line. Hevalow scored two plays later. With 1:14 left in the third, Eisenhart hauled in a 53 yard touchdown reception. The two-point conversion attempt failed. Prior, Hevalow ran for 16 yards on three attempts.
