DOVER, DE – Forward Julie Cairone scored the winning goal in overtime for the Rowan University field hockey team in a 4-3 victory at Wesley College on Tuesday night.
Cairone (sr. Medford NJ/Shawnee) recorded the game-winner at 7:43 into the overtime. She knocked in a rebound off the goalie into the cage. Cairone also assisted on the Profs’ tying goal. Forward Brittany Phillips (sr. Williamstown, NJ/Delsea Reg.) and midfielders Erin Bernat (jr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) and Ashley Adams (sr. Erial, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) each had one goal.
Rowan, ranked 16th in the nation, has a 9-5 record while Wesley is 8-6 on the season. Forward Sheree Pleasanton (sr. Smyrna, DE/Smyrna) scored twice for the Wolverines. Midfielder Madison Leone (so. Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) contributed with one goal. Midfielder Jessica Franklin (jr. Columbia, MD/Long Reach) and forward Danielle Tearl (jr. Middletown, DE/Middletown) each added an assist.
The Profs totaled 18 shots and the Wolverines collected 14. Rowan goalie Lisa Apt (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) and Wesley goalie Elizabeth Groom (jr. Bear, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech) each stopped nine shots.
In the second half, Leone hit the cage at 37:26 for a 3-1 advantage and Pleasanton registered the assist. Bernat scored at 47:40 with a blasting shot from inside the 10. Adams followed with the tying goal at 61:32 after a pass from Cairone.
Pleasanton put the Wolverines ahead with two straight goals to start the game. She scored at 17:56 in front of the cage on a pass from Franklin. Tearl picked up the assist on the second goal at 24:17. Phillips cut the deficit to one with an unassisted goal, 3:34 later. She tapped in a loose ball after a blocked shot.
Rowan travels to conference opponent William Paterson University on Saturday, October 15 for a 1 p.m. game.
