COLLEGEVILLE, PA – The Ursinus College field hockey team won 2-1 over visiting Rowan University on Wednesday night.
The Bears improve to 1-1 on the season while the Profs have a 2-1 record. In the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Preseason Poll, Ursinus was ranked third in the nation and Rowan was ninth.
All of the scoring came in the first half. Forward Alyssa Thren (jr. Barto, PA/Upper Perkiomen) put the Bears ahead 1-0 with an unassisted goal at 6:03. Midfielder Megan Yoder (sr. Lititz, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) had the second goal at 16:23 with a pass from back Taylor Weidensaul (sr. Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin). Rowan cut the deficit to one with a goal by forward Lauren Ross (sr. Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester). Midfielder Janna Tighe (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) had the assist.
Ursinus accumulated 29 shots and Rowan took five. In the Profs’ goal, Lisa Apt (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) recorded 22 saves. For the Bears, goalie LauraLee Lightwood-Mater (sr. Bethlehem, PA/George School) made two saves.
Next, Rowan travels to Messiah College on Saturday, September 11 for a 1 p.m. contest.
