Rowan Defeats William Paterson, 12-7

GLASSBORO, NJ – Backup quarterback Tim Hagerty came off the bench to account for 205 yards in Rowan University’s 12-7 win over William Paterson University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.

Both teams are 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Hagerty (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) entered the game with 2:07 remaining in the first quarter. He completed eight of 18 passes for 109 yards. Hagerty rushed for a team-high 96 yards and one touchdown on nine carries. Running back Steve Hevalow (jr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) rushed for 59 yards on 22 attempts. Wide receiver Marcus Lee (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) made three catches for 87 yards. Kicker Antonio Regalbuto (so. Clayton, NJ/St. Joseph (Hammonton)) made two of three field goals.

The Profs’ defense was led by cornerback Husain Shakir (sr. Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) with eight tackles (five solo, three assisted) and one pass breakup. Linebacker Steve Hague (sr. Buena, NJ/Buena Reg.) followed with seven stops (one solo, six assisted). Defensive end Matt Hoffman (sr. Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) posted 1.5 sacks (-14 yards), while defensive tackle Steve Williams (so. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.) and defensive end Kyle Kane (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.) each had one for -3 and -6 yards respectively. Cornerback Brandon Jones (jr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) and safety Eric Sharkey (jr. Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.) added one interception apiece.

For the Pioneers, quarterback Ryan Gresik (so. Newton, NJ/Newton) threw for 126 yards and one touchdown. He had 14 completions in 27 attempts. Running back Ray VanPeenen (fr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) carried the ball 19 times for 66 yards. Tight end Joseph Cordato (so. Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) made four grabs for 43 yards. Wide receiver Joe Muraglia (jr. Belleville, NJ/Queen of Peace) contributed with two catches for 42 yards and a touchdown.

Linebacker Damian DiIorio (jr. Totowa, NJ/Passaic Valley) recorded a game-high 10 tackles (four solo, six assisted) and recovered a fumble. Defensive ends Dyon Moore (sr. Brooklyn, NY/Hudson Catholic) and Dan Nunez (sr. Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Paramus Catholic) both registered eight stops and two tackles for a loss (-10 yards). Safety German Decena (so. Union City, NJ/Emerson) and cornerback Andre Snead (so. Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) each had one interception.

William Paterson took a 7-0 lead at 2:13 in the first quarter following a seven yard touchdown pass from Gresik to Muraglia. The Pioneers started on the Rowan 12 yard line after Decena intercepted a Profs’ pass. Gresik had two runs for two yards and completed a three yard pass to VanPeenen before the touchdown. 

At 11:35 in the second, Regalbuto made a 38 yard field goal to cut the deficit to four (7-3). In the 12 play 53 yard drive, Hagerty completed three of four passes for 27 yards. Rowan came within one (7-6) following a 28 yard field goal by Regalbuto at 6:47. Hagerty had a 32 yard pass to Lee. Hevalow followed with four rushes, totaling 14 yards.

Eleven seconds into the third period, Hagerty broke free for a 70 yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt was blocked by William Paterson cornerback Leer Biddle (sr. Sicklerville, NJ/Lenape). The Pioneers had a chance to take the lead with 6:37 remaining in the game. William Paterson started on its own 46 yard line. Gresik threw an eight yard pass to Cordato and then ran three yards on the next play. Muraglia had a 35 yard reception bringing the Pioneers down to the Profs’ eight yard line. VanPeenen had a one yard rush. Rowan had back-to-back sacks to push William Paterson back. Hoffman had the first one for 11 yards and he combined with linebacker Jerome Gordon (sr. Pemberton, NJ/Pemberton Twp.) for a five yard loss on the second. Gresik’s incomplete pass on fourth down ended the drive.

Rowan travels to Buffalo State College on Saturday, October 2 for a noon NJAC game.
