FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The Rowan University women’s soccer team defeated the University of Mary Washington, 2-1 in the first game of the UMW Classic.
In the second contest on Saturday, Emory University plays Bridgewater College at 3:30 p.m. On Sunday, Rowan meets Emory at 1 p.m. followed by Bridgewater against host Mary Washington at 3:30 p.m.
With 5:48 remaining, Rowan midfielder Dana Sakalsky (fr. Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) scored the winning goal unassisted. Forward Gabi Rangel-LaFuente (sr. Vienna, VA/George C. Marshall) had the tying goal at 49:46 for Mary Washington. In the first half, the Profs had a 1-0 lead after forward Veronica Rhea (jr. Pennsauken, NJ/Paul VI) scored with an assist from Saklasky.
Rowan is undefeated with a 4-0 record while Mary Washington is 1-1-1 on the season. The Profs totaled 12 shots and the Eagles had six. In the Rowan goal, Deana Wood (fr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.) made three saves. UMW goalie Tina Brehm (jr. Springfield, VA/Robert E. Lee) stopped three shots.
