GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University football team outgained New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent Western Connecticut State University, 580 to 102 in a 57-0 victory on Saturday.
The Profs improve to 8-1 overall and 7-1 in the conference. Rowan was second in this week’s NCAA East Region Rankings. The Colonials have a 0-9 record and a 0-8 NJAC mark.
Rowan totaled 322 yards passing and 258 rushing. Quarterback Tim Hagerty (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) completed 14 of 20 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns. He also had a rushing TD. Running back Steve Hevalow (jr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) compiled 166 yards and three touchdowns on 15 attempts. He tied the school mark for most rushing TDs in a game. Wide receiver Khalil Wallace (fr. Woodbine, NJ/Millville) made four catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Art Wright (so. Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) ran for 60 yards and one TD on 10 carries.
The defense limited the Colonials to 84 yards in the air and 18 on the ground. Linebacker Steve Hague (sr. Buena, NJ/Buena Reg.) registered nine tackles (two solo, seven assisted), two forced fumbles and had one tackle for a loss (-2 yards). Defensive end Matt Hoffman (sr. Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) and defensive tackle Steve Williams (so. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.) each made seven stops and had 2.5 tackles for a loss. Linebacker Jerome Gordon (sr. Browns Mills, NJ/Pemberton Twp.) recovered a fumble and cornerback Frank Rubino (so. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) had an interception. Defensive back Bobby Carroll (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) blocked a punt and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown.
For Western Connecticut State, quarterback Kevin Smolensky (fr. Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst) threw for 81 yards with eight completions in 17 attempts. Tight end Justin Cruickshanks (sr. Colchester, CT/Bacon Academy) made four catches for 31 yards. Tailback Tequan Boyd (so. Englewood, NJ/Dwight Morrow) had 11 carries for 19 yards.
Cornerback Tyrell Ballard (so. Bridgeport, CT/Fairfield Prep) and linebacker Greg Galasso (jr. Brewster, NY/Brewster) both tallied nine tackles. Galasso added one sack (-11 yards). Linebacker Keith Getz (sr. North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) contributed with seven tackles (one solo, six assisted).
Rowan went ahead 6-0 at 14:28 in the first quarter on a two yard touchdown rush by Hevalow. The PAT attempt failed. Rowan started on the Western Connecticut State 41 yard line after an onside kick to start the game. On the first play from scrimmage, Hagerty threw a 39 yard pass to Wallace and Hevalow found the end zone on the next play. At 6:58, Profs’ kicker Antonio Regalbuto (so. Clayton, NJ/St. Joseph (Hammonton)) made a 26 yard field goal. In the drive, Hagerty threw for 67 yards with four completions in five attempts.
Hagerty connected with Wallace on a 38 yard touchdown pass at 1:56 to increase the lead to 16-0. Wide receiver Justin Long (sr. Sicklerville, NJ/Pennsauken) had two grabs for 19 yards in the drive. With eight seconds remaining, Carroll blocked a punt at the Western Connecticut 27 yard line. He recovered the ball and carried it into the end zone to give Rowan a 23-0 advantage.
At 8:30 in the second period, Wallace hauled in a 42 yard touchdown reception. On the Colonials’ ensuing possession, Hague forced a fumble and Gordon recovered it giving the Profs the ball on the Western Connecticut State 36 yard line. Two plays later, Hevalow scored on a 22 yard touchdown run with 5:43 on the clock. He added a seven yard TD carry with 56 seconds left to make the score, 44-0 at halftime. In the drive, Hevalow had six touches for 39 yards.
After a scoreless third quarter, Hagerty had a one yard touchdown rush at 13:42 in the fourth. The extra point was no good. Hevalow recorded a 37 yard run and tight end Chris Garcia (so. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) made a 25 yard grab in the drive. Wright scored on a 28 yard TD run at 9:49. He had three carries for 45 yards.
Rowan travels to The College of New Jersey on Saturday, November 13 at noon for its final NJAC game of the regular season.
