GLASSBORO, NJ – Forward Lauren Ross scored three goals to lead Rowan University to a 5-0 victory over Stevens Institute of Technology in a nonconference game on Wednesday night.
Rowan has a 12-5 record, while Stevens is 8-9. The Profs were ranked 18th in this week’s Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Coaches Poll.
Midfielder Ashley Adams (jr. Erial, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) compiled one goal and one assist. Back Rachael Dix (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) added one goal. Forward Julie Cairone (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) dished three assists and back Lauren Conner (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) had one.
Rowan took 31 shots and Stevens had six. Profs goalie Lisa Apt (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) made four saves. It marked her first shutout of the year. Goalie Ellyn Griggs (sr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) turned away 19 shots for the Ducks.
After a scoreless first half, Adams’ unassisted goal at 60:22 gave Rowan a 1-0 lead. Just over a minute later, Dix scored on a penalty corner with a feed from Cairone. Ross’ (sr. Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester) first goal came at 65:06. Dix fired a shot from outside the circle and Conner and Cairone both deflected it to Ross in front of the cage. At 67:01, Adams fired a shot from the right side and Ross knocked it in for the goal. Ross scored on a pass from Cairone with 1:42 remaining in the game. This season, she has registered team-highs with 32 points and 15 goals.
Rowan faces Christopher Newport University on Saturday, October 30 at 12:30 p.m. The game will be played in Arlington, VA.
