Profs Roll Over Bengals, 24-7

BUFFALO, NY – Running back Steve Hevalow scored two rushing touchdowns to lead Rowan University to a 24-7 victory over Buffalo State College in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday afternoon.

The Profs improve to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The Bengals have a 0-4 overall record and a 0-3 NJAC mark. Hevalow carried the ball 30 times for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Tim Hagerty (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) threw for 175 yards with 12 completions in 19 attempts. He ran for 127 yards on 16 touches. Wide receiver Justin Long (sr. Sicklerville, NJ/Pennsauken) made five catches for 48 yards. He also had a 10 yard touchdown run. Tight end Kevin DelleDonne (jr. Summit, NJ/Summit) had three grabs for 44 yards. Wideout Marcus Lee (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) hauled in two passes for 75 yards.

Linebacker Dean Hammel (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) registered nine tackles (five solo, four assisted) and one sack (-7 yards). Linebacker Steve Hague (sr. Buena, NJ/Buena Reg.) followed with eight stops (four solo, four assisted), one tackle for a loss (-3 yards) and one forced fumble. Defensive end Matt Hoffman (sr. Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) compiled seven tackles (four solo, three assisted), 3.5 tackles for a loss (-22 yards) and two sacks (-17 yards). Defensive tackle Matt Sees (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) and linebacker Jerome Gordon (sr. Browns Mills, NJ/Pemberton Twp.) both had five tackles (one solo, four assisted) and two tackles for a loss. Sees posted one sack (-6 yards), while Gordon recovered a fumble. Safety Eric Sharkey (jr. Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.) intercepted a pass.

For the Bengals, quarterback Nate Geary (fr. Hamburg, NY/Frontier) completed eight of 19 passes for 73 yards and one touchdown. Fullback Ben Mauer (jr. Corning, NY/Corning West) ran for 37 yards on 10 carries. Wide receiver Mike Doherty (fr. Towanda, NY/Kenmore East) made one catch for 31 yards. Wideout Steve Stillman (jr. Buffalo, NY/Kenmore East) had one grab for an 11 yard touchdown.

Defensive back Kevin Healy (jr. East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) compiled a game-high 12 tackles (five solo, seven assisted) and one tackle for a loss (-4 yards). Defensive backs Brandon Hodgins (jr. Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) and Kam Johnson (so. Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) followed with 11 (six solo, five assisted) and 10 tackles (two solo, eight assisted) respectively. Linebacker Jordan Boser (so. Geneva, IL/Geneva Community) and defensive lineman Gorden Schubert (so. W. Seneca, NY/W. Seneca East) each forced a fumble. Defensive back Greg Chadwick (sr. Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) and Schubert both had one fumble recovery.

At 5:52 in the first quarter, Hevalow put Rowan ahead 7-0 with a 32 yard touchdown run. The Profs started on their own 44 yard line after wide receiver Myles Drummond (fr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) blocked a punt. Hagerty connected with DelleDonne for a 15 yard pass and Hevalow had a nine yard rush prior to the touchdown.

In the second stanza, Hevalow’s five yard touchdown carry made the score, 14-0 at 14:34. In the drive, Hagerty had a 22 yard run and completed a 35 yard pass to Lee. Buffalo State cut the deficit to seven (14-7) following an 11 yard touchdown reception by Stillman at 11:38. Running back Greg Spears (fr. Syracuse, NY/Henninger) had a 33 yard run to start the drive. Mauer carried the ball three times for 12 yards and Geary threw a seven yard pass to wide receiver Rob Smith (sr. Rochester, NY/McQuaid). With 6:35 on the clock, Long had a 10 yard touchdown rush for a 21-7 halftime advantage. Hevalow posted 40 yards on the ground with five touches prior to Long’s run.

After a scoreless third period, Profs’ kicker Antonio Regalbuto (so. Clayton, NJ/St. Joseph (Hammonton)) made a 21 yard field goal, increasing the lead to 24-7. Rowan started on its own 41 yard line. Hagerty had runs of 11 and 20 yards and threw a seven yard pass to Long. Running back Keith Corcoran (so. Atlantic City, NJ/St. Joseph (Hammonton)) added 10 yards rushing on two carries, while Hevalow had five yards on four attempts.

Rowan hosts NJAC opponent Kean University on Saturday, October 9 at 1 p.m.
