GLASSBORO, NJ – Running back Steve Hevalow ran for 139 yards and one touchdown to lead Rowan University to a 20-17 upset over 19th ranked SUNY Cortland in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday afternoon.
Rowan improves to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference. Cortland has a 5-1 overall and NJAC record. Hevalow (jr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) had 27 attempts, averaging 5.1 yards per carry. Quarterback Tim Hagerty (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) completed 10 of 22 passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Kevin DelleDonne (jr. Summit, NJ/Summit) made four catches for 40 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Marcus Lee (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) added four receptions for 38 yards and one TD.
Linebacker Dean Hammel (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) posted a team-high 10 tackles (seven solo, three assisted) and four tackles for a loss (-5 yards). He also had one interception. Defensive tackle Steve Williams (so. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.) made six assisted tackles, three tackles for a loss (-5 yards) and blocked a kick. Defensive end Matt Hoffman (sr. Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) forced a fumble, while safety Eric Sharkey (jr. Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.) recovered one. Cornerback Mark Kinney (jr. Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Twp.) and safety Rocky Aliberti (sr. Sewell, NJ/Clearview Reg.) contributed with one interception apiece.
For the Red Dragons, quarterback Dan Pitcher (gr. Cortland, NY/Cortland) threw for 138 yards and one touchdown with 15 completions in 33 attempts. Tailback Justin Autera (so. Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) rushed for 83 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries. He also had 49 yards receiving with four catches. Wide receiver Anthony Giuliano (sr. Thornwood, NY/Westlake) hauled in four balls for 39 yards. Wideout Kadeem Miller (so. Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) had a 32 yard touchdown reception.
Defensive end Evan Wyler (sr. Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) compiled 10 tackles (five solo, five assisted), three tackles for a loss (-9 yards) and one sack (-7 yards). Linebackers Cody Allen (jr. Medina, NY/Medina) and Bill Smith (jr. Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) and defensive tackle Lou Crispo (sr. Eastchester, NY/Eastchester) all had nine tackles. Allen added one sack (-4 yards), while Crispo blocked a kick. Defensive backs Joe Lopez (sr. Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue), Chris Hanlon (sr. Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) and D.J. Romano (jr. Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) all forced a fumble. Lopez had a fumble recovery and an interception. Defensive back Mason Ellis (sr. Pasadena, MD/Northeast) and Hanlon both recovered a fumble. Linebacker Tom Lewis (jr. Elma, NY/Iroquois) chipped in with one interception.
Cortland went ahead 7-0 at 14:30 in the first quarter following a 43 yard touchdown run by Autera on the second play of the game. At 3:45, Pitcher threw a 36 yard pass to Miller to put the Red Dragons up 14-0. Cortland started on the Rowan 46 yard line after Lopez recovered a fumbled punt return.
Rowan cut the deficit to seven (14-7) after Hagerty completed a two yard touchdown pass to Lee with 1:27 left to play in the first half. The Profs started at their own 23 yard line after Williams blocked a 36 yard field goal attempt. In the 14 play, 77 yard drive, Hevalow ran for 35 yards on eight carries. Hagerty completed four of five passes for 35 yards.
At 9:14 in the third period, Cortland kicker Marc Corrado (jr. Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) made a 26 yard field goal to stretch the lead to 10 (17-7). Lopez’s interception gave the Red Dragons the ball on the Profs’ 29 yard line. Autera had runs of 15 and two yards and Pitcher connected on a three yard pass before Corrado’s kick. Hevalow had a 38 yard touchdown scamper at 7:31. The PAT attempt was blocked by Crispo, making the score, 17-13. Hevalow had a 13 yard rush and Hagerty threw a nine yard pass to Lee prior to the touchdown.
With 6:40 left to play in the fourth quarter, DelleDonne hauled in a 17 yard pass from Hagerty. Hammel’s seven yard interception return put Rowan on the Cortland 19 yard line. Hevalow had a two yard run on the first play. After two incomplete passes, Hagerty found DelleDonne over the middle on fourth down for the game-winning score. On the second play of Cortland’s next drive, Kinney had a 15 yard interception return.
On Saturday, October 23, Rowan travels to The College at Brockport for a 1 p.m. NJAC game.
