Rowan Shuts Out Sixth Ranked TCNJ, 4-0

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s soccer team shut out The College of New Jersey, 4-0 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday. Forward Jess Babice scored three of the Profs’ four goals.

It was the first loss of the season for the Lions (7-1). TCNJ has a 1-1 NJAC mark. Rowan improves to 5-1-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference. This week, in the National Soccer Coaches Association National Rankings, the Lions were sixth while the Profs were 23rd. In the South Atlantic Region, TCNJ was the number one team and Rowan was ranked third.

Babice (jr. Groveville, NJ/Steinert) now has eight goals on the season. She is Rowan’s leading scorer with 17 points. Midfielder Holly Bundy (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) contributed with a goal while forwards Veronica Rhea (so. Pennsauken, NJ/Paul VI) and Melanie Wittenberger (fr. Tabernacle, NJ/Seneca) and midfielders Evynn Wright (so. Marlton, NJ/Eastern Reg.) and Christie Fink (so. Hamilton Square, NJ/Steinert) all had one assist.

TCNJ took 13 shots and Rowan totaled 12. Goalie Sarah Volkomer (sr. Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) made three saves for the shutout. She had missed the last four games because of an injury. For the Lions, goalkeeper Jessica Clarke (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) had three saves.

The Profs were ahead 1-0 after the first half. Babice scored at 20:21 on a breakaway with a shot to the right side of the net. Rhea crossed the ball to Fink who then had a pass up the middle of the field to Babice.

In the second period, Babice knocked in a rebound (56:47) after Wright’s shot hit the goal post. Bundy made it 3-0 at 64:59 when she hit the back of the net with a shot from the center of the box. With 4:10 remaining, Wittenberger blasted a long shot to the right corner of the goal and Babice kicked the ball over the goal line.

Next, Rowan hosts NJAC opponent William Paterson University on Saturday, September 26 at 1 p.m. and TCNJ travels to Montclair State University for a 1 p.m. contest.
