Rowan Tops Lycoming, 29-7 in Season Opener

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – Quarterback Frank Wilczynski threw one touchdown and ran for another to lead Rowan University to a 29-7 victory over Lycoming College on Saturday.

Wilczynski (sr. Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) completed eight of 17 passes for 79 yards and one touchdown. He also carried the ball 10 times for 86 yards and one touchdown. Superback Ryan Leafey (sr. Westville, NJ/Deptford) rushed for 68 yards on 18 touches. Wide receiver Mark Lisa (jr. Highland Lakes, NJ/Vernon Twp.) had five receptions for 36 yards. Wideout James Kinloch (fr. Westampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) recorded a 39 yard touchdown catch for a touchdown. Kicker Mark Getsinger (sr. Deptford, NJ/Deptford) connected on three of three field goal attempts and two of three PAT tries.

The Profs’ defense limited Lycoming to 104 yards of total offense (70 passing and 34 rushing). Linebacker Kevin Taylor (sr. Westwood, NJ/Westwood Reg.) led the way with seven tackles. Defensive end Matt Hoffman (jr. Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) posted five tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss (-16 yards) and 1.5 sacks (-13 yards). Linebacker Steve Hague (jr. Vineland, NJ/Buena Reg.) had one sack (-12 yards) and one interception, which he returned for a touchdown. Safety Mike Barone (sr. Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) also intercepted a pass, while linebacker Jerome Gordon (jr. Browns Mills, NJ/Pemberton Twp.) had one sack (-10 yards). Linebacker Dom Marchiani (jr. Margate, NJ/St. Joseph (Hammonton)) forced a fumble and recovered it.

For Lycoming (0-1), quarterback Chris Dwyer (sr. Dalton, PA/Lackawanna Trail) threw for 70 yards and one touchdown, completing nine of 24 pass attempts. Running backs Josh Kleinfelter (jr. Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) and Mark Rosa (sr. Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) ran for 26 (13 attempts) and 21 yards (11 carries) respectively. Wide receiver Ryan Wagaman (so. Biglerville, PA/Biglerville) made three grabs for 43 yards and one touchdown.

Defensive lineman Anthony Marascio (so. Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) registered nine tackles and had 1.5 sacks (-15 yards). Defensive back Jim Daley (jr. Warrington, PA/Archbishop Wood) compiled eight stops and one tackle for a loss (-3 yards), while linebacker Pat McAfee (jr. Warminster, PA/Archbishop Wood) had seven tackles and one pass breakup. Defensive back Chuck Bellitto (jr. New Holland, PA/Garden Spot) contributed with one interception.

Rowan went ahead 3-0 following a 26 yard field goal by Getsinger at 8:37 in the first quarter. In the drive, Leafey carried the ball two times for 16 yards and Wilczynski had a 13 yard rush.

In the second, Wilczynski connected with Kinloch for a 39 yard touchdown pass (13:18) to make the score, 9-0 following the missed extra point. Wilczynski completed two passes for 45 yards. With 47 seconds left in the half, Getsinger made a 20 yard field goal to give the Profs a 12-0 advantage at the intermission. Rowan started on its own 41 yard line. Superback Jon Downes (sr. Gibbsboro, NJ/Valley Forge Military (PA)) ran for 22 yards on four touches and Wilczynski added a 21 yard carry.

Dwyer threw a 21 yard touchdown pass to Wagaman to cut the deficit to five (12-7) at 12:12 in the third quarter. The Warriors started on the Profs’ 21 yard line after a 45 yard punt return by defensive back Ray Bierbach (so. Hunlock Creek, PA/Northwest Area). Sixteen seconds later, Wilczynski ran 45 yards for a touchdown. Safety Steve Wall’s (sr. Morris Plains, NJ/Parsippany Hills) 33 yard kickoff return gave Rowan the ball on the Lycoming 45 yard line.

At 7:28 in the third, Hague intercepted a pass and took it 14 yards for the touchdown to put Rowan ahead, 26-7. Getsinger added a 36 yard field goal with 4:50 remaining in the game. The Profs started on the Warriors’ 28 yard line after an 11 yard punt return by Wall. Backup quarterback Tim Hagerty (jr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) completed a 10 yard pass to Leafey to set up the kick.

Rowan (1-0) travels to SUNY Cortland for its conference opener on Saturday, September 19 at 1 p.m.
