Hayes Competes in Long Jump at NCAA Champoinships

TERRE HAUTE, IN – Rowan University’s Kyle Hayes competed in the long jump at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track Championships on Friday. The two-day championships (March 13-14) are being held at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Hayes (so. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) finished 12th with 22’ 4.5” (6.82 meters). The long jump was won by Buena Vista University’s Eric Bertelsen with a jump of 24’ 9” (7.54 meters).

It was the second straight season, Hayes advanced to the NCAA Championships. He qualified for the national championships with a distance of 23’ 2.75” (7.08 meters) at the Collegiate Track Conference (CTC) Championships (Feb. 14). Last year, he finished 10th overall with a jump of 22’ 5” (6.83 meters).

This year, Hayes also recorded a NCAA provisional at the Frank Colden Invitational (Feb. 7). He won the long jump with 23’ (7.01 meters). The NCAA provisional is 22’ 10” (6.96 meters) while the automatic is 23’ 9” (7.24 meters). Hayes also took first place in the long jump at the CTC Championships (Feb. 14) and the Lehigh Covert Classic (Jan. 24). He had a distance of 22’ 7.25” (6.89 meters) at the Lehigh meet. At the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championships, Hayes finished fourth with 22’ 7” (6.88 meters). Five times this season, he was named the NJAC Field Athlete of the Week.
