GLASSBORO, NJ – Five players scored in double figures to lead Rowan University over Kean University, 87-55 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.
Forward Tyson Hartnett (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) was the scoring leader with 26 points. Guard Billy Care (sr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) contributed with 16 points. Forward Tim Cook (sr. Willingboro, NJ/Glassboro) totaled 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Guards Aaron Spellman (sr. Pine Hill, NJ/St. Joseph’s (Hammonton)) and Dan Reddan (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) added 11 and 10 points respectively. Spellman also recorded six assists and four steals.
Rowan improves to 11-11 overall and 4-6 in the conference. Kean drops to 11-12 on the season and 4-7 in the NJAC. For the Cougars, forward Brian Lytle (jr. Union, NJ/St. Mark’s (MA)) scored 12 points.
The Profs jumped out to a 12 point lead (19-7) in the first 7:14. Spellman made six points and Hartnett followed with five. Rowan was ahead 22-10 at 11:15 after a jumper by Cook. Guard Michael Oglesby (fr. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) nailed a three at 9:37 and Kean trailed by nine (22-13). Care’s basket put Rowan up by 13 points (31-18) with 6:34 remaining. The Cougars pulled within five points (32-27) at 4:47 after a three by guard Vinnie Darpino (jr. Colonia, NJ/Colonia). The Profs closed the period with a 10-5 run to lead 42-32 at the intermission. Care compiled 13 first half points and Hartnett had 11.
In the second half, Kean trailed by 15 points (53-38) at 10:24. Rowan pulled away with 14 straight points in a four minute span for a 29 point advantage (67-38). Cook’s two free throws at 4:13 made the score 73-45. Reddan hit two foul shots at 1:43 that gave the Profs a 30 point lead (81-51) with 1:43 remaining. Rowan outscored Kean in the second half, 45-23. Hartnett scored 15 points in the last period. The Profs ended the game with 31 free throws in 40 attempts.
Rowan is home again on Wednesday, February 11 against Richard Stockton College at 8 p.m. It is the Profs’ last home game of the regular season.
