Rowan Upsets Kean, 57-54

GLASSBORO, NJ – Forward Ashley Cieplicki converted a three-point play with 1.3 seconds remaining to give Rowan University a 57-54 victory over 17th ranked Kean University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.

The score was tied 54-54 following two free throws by Kean forward Cardiss Jackman (jr. Tobyhanna, PA/Pocono Mountain W.) with 31 seconds left. Rowan held for the last shot and Cieplicki (sr. Haworth, NJ/Dumont) pulled down a rebound at the four second mark. She quickly layed the ball back in and was fouled with 1.3 seconds remaining. She sank the free throw and the Cougars missed a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer.

The Profs improve to 12-7 overall and 6-4 in the conference. The Cougars have an 18-4 record and a 10-1 NJAC mark. Forward Jessica Nimbley (jr. Middletown, NJ/St. John Vianney) led Rowan with 15 points. Forward Amanda Jennings (jr. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) and guard Gina Catanzariti (so. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) added 12 points apiece, while Cieplicki finished with 10. Jennings and Cieplicki both grabbed 11 boards.

For Kean, Jackman scored a game-high 24 points and had five steals. Forward Tiffany Patrick (so. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) totaled 15 points and eight rebounds. Guard Ebony Jackson (sr. Newark, NJ/Malcolm X Shabazz) posted nine points, six boards and four assists.

Rowan was ahead 35-20 at halftime. Cieplicki’s foul shot at the 15 minute mark made the score 42-27. Kean went on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to seven (42-35) at 11:49. Patrick scored four points, Jackman hit a three-pointer and Jackson added a free throw. Rowan had the next five points to go back up by 13 (48-35) at 9:48. The Profs had a 13 point advantage (50-37) following Jennings’ layup at 8:57. The Cougars scored the next 11 points to come within two points (50-48) with 2:34 on the clock. Jackson and Patrick each had four points, while Jackman added three. Kean forward Danielle Brown’s (jr. North Brunswick, NJ/St. Peter’s) layup at 1:12 tied the game (52-52). Nimbley had two foul shots (:53) before Jackman’s two free throws tied the game at 54. Nimbley recorded 12 points in the second period. Jackman and Patrick tallied 13 and 12 points respectively for the Cougars.

In the first half, the game was tied 12-12 at 12:52. Rowan scored 16 straight points over the next 8:48 to lead 28-12. Guard Danielle Rohe (jr. Dumont, NJ/Dumont), Catanzariti and Jennings each had four points in the surge. Jennings’ layup as time expired gave Rowan a 15 point halftime advantage. Catanzariti compiled 12 points in the first period, while Jackman had 11.

Rowan hosts Richard Stockton College in a NJAC game on Wednesday, February 11 at 6 p.m. Kean hosts the University of Scranton on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
