NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – The Rowan University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed in the final day of the Metropolitan Championships on Sunday. The men finished in fourth place with 850 points, while the women took eighth with 612. The three-day meet was held at Rutgers University.
The College of New Jersey men and women were both the overall winners with 1635 and 1301.5 points respectively. Rowan diving coach Dave McNally was selected the Diving Coach of the Year. The men’s 400 freestyle relay of Josh Spivey (fr. Margate, NJ/Atlantic City), Bill Malone (fr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), Steve Tucker (jr. Pittsgrove, NJ/Sacred Heart) and Kevin Wallac (sr. Somers Point, NJ/Lenape) captured fourth place in 3:11.37. The women’s 400 freestyle relay came in eighth place with a time of 3:45.64. The relay was comprised of Janina Wojcik (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.), Samantha Edwards (so. Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown), Stacey Rahter (so. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.) and Kate Winters (so. West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.).
Bryan Carlisle (sr. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.) won the three meter diving with 556.60 points. Mark Balesteri (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) finished third with 472.30 points. Jeff Terrell (fr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) captured seventh place in the 1650 freestyle (16:51.41). Wallace took seventh in the 200 butterfly (1:57.11) and Jeremy Soto (jr. Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) followed 11th (2:02.77). Brian McDermott (so. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) and Matt Marzolf (fr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) placed 10th (1:57.91) and 15th (2:02.20) respectively in the 200 backstroke.
In the 100 freestyle, Malone was 14th (48.27), followed by Spivey. Jake Taylor (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) had a 10th place in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.51).
For the women, Samantha Rottkamp (so. Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) took second place in the one meter diving with 386.95 points. Winters finished fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:13.02) and Becky Goldberg (jr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) followed 13th (2:20.30). In the 1650 freestyle, Julie Furdyna (so. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) came in 13th place (19:01.25).
Wojcik took 13th in the 100 freestyle (55.63). Rahter was 15th in the 200 breaststroke (2:35.72). Anne O’Gorman (so. Boonton, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) and Michelle Dunn (fr. Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) were 10th (2:19.31) and 14th (2:25.90) respectively in the 200 butterfly.
