Cieplicki Scores Winning Basket in 69-67 Victory Over Rutgers-Camden

SEWELL, NJ – Forward Ashley Cieplicki scored the winning basket for Rowan University in a 69-67 victory over conference opponent Rutgers-Camden on Monday night.

Cieplicki (sr. Haworth, NJ/Dumont) made a layup with 16 seconds left. Rutgers-Camden missed its final shot and guard Gina Catanzariti (so. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) grabbed the rebound for the Profs. Catanzariti was the team’s leading scorer with 14 points followed by Cieplicki with 13. Forward Jessica Nimbley (jr. Middletown, NJ/St. John Vianney) compiled a game-high 11 rebounds.

Rowan has an overall record of 13-9 with a 7-6 mark in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). Rutgers-Camden drops to 2-21 on the season and 0-12 in the conference. For the Scarlet Raptors, guard Shamira McNair (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) scored 17 points. Forward Karima Blackwell (so. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) and guard Casey Crenny (fr. Blackwood, NJ/Camden Catholic) each contributed with 13 points. Blackwell also pulled down 10 boards.

The Profs started the second half with a four point lead (35-31). The score was tied seven times before the end of the game. With 3:48 left, Cieplicki made sank two foul shots that made the score 62-62. Catanzariti followed with a basket (64-62) at 3:34. Blackwell tied it at 64 (2:51) with two free throws. Forward Stephanie Deisley (fr. Riverside, NJ/Holy Cross) then made the first of two foul shots to go up by one (65-64) at 2:18. Guard Jean Jones (sr. Lawnside, NJ/Haddon Heights) put Rowan back on top, 67-65 (1:02) with a basket and a foul shot. Deisley’s two free throws tied the score at 67 with 27 seconds on the clock.

In the first period, Catanzariti hit a three-pointer that put Rowan ahead 8-6 at 14:56. Crenny answered with a three to retake the lead (14:41). She put the Scarlet Raptors up by seven (26-19) with a three-pointer at 9:10. With 7:02 left, Rutgers-Camden had a seven point advantage (28-21). Guard Brynn DeGroff (sr. Wildwood Crest, NJ/Wildwood) started the Profs come back with a three (6:45) and forward Amanda Jennings (jr. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) had two free throws (6:12). Guard Danielle Rohe (jr. Dumont, NJ/Dumont) gave the Profs a one point advantage (29-28) with a three-pointer at 4:44. Jennings’ layup at 2:15 made the score 35-29. Blackwell had the final basket (:50) to trail 35-31 at the break.

Rowan travels to Baltimore, MD on Tuesday, February 17 for a nonconference game against the College of Notre Dame at 7 p.m.
