SEWELL, NJ – Three players scored in double figures to lead Rowan University to a 67-52 victory over New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent Rutgers-Camden in its season finale on Monday night. The game was played at Gloucester County College in Sewell, NJ.
Rowan finishes the year with a 12-13 overall record and a 5-8 conference mark. Rutgers-Camden is 6-18 overall and 1-11 in the NJAC. The Profs were led by guard Aaron Spellman (sr. Pine Hill, NJ/St. Joseph’s (Hammonton)) and forward Tyson Hartnett (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) with 16 points apiece. It marked a season-high for Spellman. Hartnett also grabbed six boards, while Spellman dished five assists. Forward Tim Cook (jr. Willingboro, NJ/Glassboro) added 10 points and eight rebounds.
For the Scarlet Raptors, guard Rory Thornton (jr. Vauxhall, NJ/Union) scored a career-high 18 points. Forward Tarik Hanton (jr. Philadelphia, PA/Kensington) contributed with 10 points and six rebounds. Guard Liam James (so. Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester City) had eight points and guard Joe Bush (fr. New Brunswick, NJ/Somerset County Vo-Tech) pulled down 10 boards.
Rowan led 33-21 after the first half. Cook’s jumper at 18:43 in the second gave the Profs a 14 point advantage (37-23). The Scarlet Raptors went on a 10-3 run to cut the deficit to seven (40-33) with 14:14 remaining. Guard Joshua Askew (jr. Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Twp.) scored four points and guard Bill Banks (sr. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) and Hanton each had three. At 13:03 Hanton had a layup that made the score, 42-35. Rowan scored three straight baskets to go ahead by 13 (48-35) at 11:31. Spellman nailed two free throws at 7:33 to push the lead to 17 (55-38).
Rowan was up 57-41 following Cook’s layup with 5:47 left to play. Rutgers-Camden tallied 11 straight points to pull within five (57-52) with 2:36 on the clock. Bush recorded five points, while Thornton had four. The Profs closed out the game with the next 10 points to seal the victory. Spellman had four of the 10 points. Thornton and Spellman both scored nine points in the second period.
In the first half, Rowan was ahead 13-12 at 12:41. The Profs had a 12-1 surge for a 12 point advantage (25-13) at 6:08. Guard Allen Pritchett (jr. Camden, NJ/Woodbury) and Spellman posted five points each in the stretch. Thornton’s layup with 5:20 remaining brought the Scarlet Raptors within seven (25-18). The score was 29-21 at 2:14. Cook closed out the period with layups at 1:48 and :41 to put the Profs up by 12 (33-21) at the intermission.
Rutgers-Camden hosts Richard Stockton College in its final game of the year on Wednesday, February 18 at 8 p.m. The game will be played at Gloucester County College in Sewell, NJ.
