TCNJ Defeats Rowan, 67-53 to stay perfect at home

EWING, NJ – The College of New Jersey women’s basketball team came back in the second half to win 67-53 over conference opponent Rowan University on Saturday.

The Lions had four players that scored in double figures. Guard Keri Washington (so. Ewing, NJ/Pennington Prep) led the team with a career-high 15 points and six rebounds. Center Alexandra Gregorek (jr. Mahwah, NJ/Academy of Holy Angels) contributed with 11 points while center Hillary Klimowicz (sr. Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) and forward Kelsey Kutch (so. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) added 10 points apiece. Klimowicz also grabbed seven boards.

TCNJ has an overall record of 20-4 and a 10-2 mark in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Lions are a perfect 10-0 at home this season. Rowan is 12-9 overall and 6-6 in the conference.

Guard Gina Catanzariti (so. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) led the Profs with 15 points and six rebounds. Forward Amanda Jennings (jr. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) scored 14 points off the bench. Forward Ashley Cieplicki (sr. Haworth, NJ/Dumont) compiled 10 points and six rebounds.

After being down 32-20, the Lions outscored the Profs 47-21 in the second half for the victory. TCNJ started with five straight baskets and trailed 32-30 at 17:20. Washington and Klimowicz each made two baskets and Kutch had one. Gregorek’s layup gave the Lions a one point lead (37-36) at 13:16. The Profs answered with a layup by Jennings (12:45) and a jumper by Catanzariti (12:00) to go ahead 40-37. Guard Lisa Koch (sr. Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson Twp.) tied the score at 44 for the Lions with a three-pointer at 9:27. Then TCNJ pulled away with an 18-2 surge in a seven minute span for a 16 point advantage (62-46). Washington recorded 10 second half points.

In the first period, TCNJ was up 7-6 at 13:46 after a layup by Washington. Rowan followed with four straight baskets, three from Jennings, for an eight point lead (15-7) at 10:18. Gregorek hit a jumper that cut the deficit to five points (19-14) with 7:02 remaining. Cieplicki nailed two free throws (4:45) and Catanzarti made a layup (3:45) for an 11 point advantage (26-15). Guard Brynn DeGroff’s (sr. Wildwood Crest, NJ/Wildwood) jumper at 1:18 put the Profs up by 12 points (32-20) at the intermission.

Rowan plays Rutgers-Camden on Monday, February 16 at 6 p.m. The rescheduled game will be held at Gloucester County College.
