Rowan Rolls Over Buffalo State, 57-7

GLASSBORO, NJ – Rowan University outgained Buffalo State College, 422-44 en route to a 57-7 victory in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.

The Profs improve to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference. The Bengals have a 1-6 record with a 1-5 NJAC mark. Rowan dedicated its newly renovated facility to longtime coach Richard Wackar. The new name is Coach Richard Wackar Stadium.

The Rowan offense was led by superback Ryan Leafey (sr. Westville, NJ/Deptford) with 62 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Quarterback Frank Wilczynski (sr. Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) added 58 yards and one touchdown on seven rushes. He also threw for 119 yards and one touchdown with nine completions in 16 attempts. Wilczynski and Leafey did not play the second half.

Superback Jon Downes (sr. Gibbsboro, NJ/Valley Forge Military (PA)) compiled 53 yards and two touchdowns on 10 attempts. Quarterback Tim Hagerty (jr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) and superback Tariq Gaines (fr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) added one rushing touchdown apiece. Wide receiver Anthony Barone (so. Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) made three catches for 76 yards and one touchdown.

The defense held Buffalo State to 76 yards passing and -32 yards rushing. Linebacker Andrew Yezzi (sr. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) registered seven tackles, 3.5 tackles for a loss (-16 yards), one sack (-6 yards) and two forced fumbles. Linebacker Kevin Taylor (sr. Westwood, NJ/Westwood) posted six stops and one tackle for a loss (-4 yards). Defensive end Matt Hoffman (jr. Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) had 0.5 sacks (-6 yards) and blocked a punt. Defensive end Steve Hague (jr. Vineland, NJ/Buena Reg.) forced a fumble.

For the Bengals, quarterback Ryan Lehotsky (fr. N. Royalton, OH/N. Royalton) completed seven of 23 passes for 76 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Sherman Nelson (fr. Buffalo, NY/Cardinal O’Hara) made two grabs for 46 yards and tight end Blake Malizia (jr. Rockville Center, NY/Southside) added two catches for 25 yards. Wideout Matt Pagano (so. Walworth, NY/E. Rochester) recorded one receiving touchdown.

Linebacker Eddie Weiser (fr. Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) had a game-high 11 tackles and 0.5 tackles for a loss (-2 yards). Defensive back Mark Samuels (so. Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) added eight stops and one tackle for a loss (-1 yard). Defensive end Jermaine Rose (sr. Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) and defensive tackle Daniel Mizro (so. Newark, NY/Newark) both forced a fumble. Linebackers Brandon Hodgins (so. Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) and Adam Piscitello (so. Depew, NY/Cheektowaga) each recovered a fumble.

Rowan went ahead 7-0 on its first possession. At 14:09, Wilczynski connected with Barone for a 59 yard touchdown. In the second quarter, Leafey broke free for a 29 yard touchdown run at 13:14. The Profs started on the Bengals’ 29 yard line after a short punt and Leafey found the end zone on the first play. At 7:51, Leafey scored on a one yard touchdown carry. In the drive, he compiled 23 yards on four rushes. Downes’ one yard touchdown run at 3:15 put Rowan up 28-0. Wilczynski was two for three for 29 yards. At 2:33, Rowan recorded a safety after Buffalo State had a high snap that went over the punter’s head into the end zone. With 47 seconds remaining, Wilczynski scored on a one yard run to give the Profs a 37-0 halftime advantage.. He completed two passes for 20 yards in the drive.

The Profs tacked on a 36 yard touchdown scamper by Downes at 7:48 in the third. The PAT attempt was blocked by defensive back Greg Chadwick (jr. Lancaster, NY/Lancaster). Buffalo State got on the scoreboard at 3:05. Lehotsky threw a nine yard touchdown pass to Pagano. Lehotsky completed three passes for 61 yards. Gaines scored on a 14 yard touchdown rush as time expired to increase the lead to 50-7. A roughing the kicker penalty gave Rowan the ball on the Buffalo State 40 yard line. Hagerty threw a 29 yard pass prior to tight end Chris Garcia (fr. Bellemead, NJ/Montgomery) prior to the touchdown. Hagerty capped off the scoring with a five yard touchdown carry at 5:12 in the fourth period.

Rowan travels to Kean University for a NJAC game on Saturday, October 31 at 1 p.m.
