UNION, NJ – The Kean University men’s basketball team defeated Rowan University, 59-49 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night.

The Cougars improve to 7-7 overall and 1-2 in the conference. The Profs have a 7-7 record with a 1-1 NJAC mark.

Kean was led by guard Michael Oglesby (fr. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) with 15 points. Guard Dean Hughes (so. Pemberton Twp., NJ/Pemberton) and forward Akinwande Oshodi (so. Florence, NJ/Florence) contributed with 11 points apiece. Oshodi grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Guard Yasien Beatty (sr. Jersey City, NJ/St. Mary) dished five assists.

For Rowan, guard Billy Care (sr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) scored 13 points. Forward Tyson Hartnett (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) totaled seven points and seven rebounds. Guard Dan Reddan (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) added seven points.

In the first half, the score was tied 8-8 following a layup and a foul shot by Hughes at 14:32. The Cougars went up 10-8 after forward Bryan Lytle (jr. Union, NJ/St. Mark’s (MA)) sunk two free throws at 12:51. The lead changed four more times before the Profs tied it up at 15-15 on a layup by forward Steve Secula (fr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) with 7:45 remaining. The score was tied four more times with the last one (24-24) coming with one minute on the clock. Kean forward Jonathan Jones (so. Linden, NJ/Linden) hit a jumper with 33 seconds left to give the Cougars a 26-24 halftime advantage. Care led all scorers with eight points in the first period.

Kean led 33-32 at 14:47 in the second after Care made two free throws. The Cougars scored the next seven points to go up 40-32 at 12:30. Hughes had four points in the surge. Kean was ahead 42-35 at 11:14. Rowan cut the deficit to three (42-39) with a layup by Reddan (10:52) and two foul shots by guard Allen Pritchett (jr. Camden, NJ/Woodbury) (10:34). Rowan trailed by five (49-44) following a free throw by Reddan at 5:28. Kean reeled off five straight points for a 54-44 advantage at 2:41. Hughes and Oshodi each made a basket, while Jones had a free throw. The Profs came within eight points three times. The last one was with 43 seconds remaining (57-49) on a foul shot by Reddan. Oshodi ended the scoring with two free throws with 19 seconds left to play.

Rowan hosts Montclair State University in a NJAC game on Saturday, January 10 at 3 p.m.
