GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team defeated Penn State York, 78-62 in a nonconference game on Monday night.
Forward Tim Cook (jr. Willingboro, NJ/Glassboro) led the Profs with a career high 21 points. Cook also grabbed seven rebounds. Forward Tyson Hartnett (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and guard Billy Care (sr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) each contributed with 10 points. Care dished seven assists and compiled five steals.
Rowan improves to 7-6 overall while Penn State York drops to 4-8 on the season. For the Lions, guard Eric Aspril scored 17 points off the bench. Guard Cody Correll followed with 15 points and guard Nico Karanicolas added 13. Forward Eric Hudak pulled down seven boards and guard Jon Showers totaled eight assists.
The Profs had a nine point lead (14-5) in the first 6:16 of the game. Care contributed with six of the 14 points. The Lions trailed by nine (21-12) after Hudak’s jumper at 11:13. Rowan followed with four straight baskets to lead 29-12 with 8:53 remaining. The 17 point advantage was the Profs’ biggest lead of the half. Penn State York pulled within nine points (33-24) when Corell made a foul shot at 4:24. Rowan was ahead 40-28 at the intermission after guard Dan Reddan’s (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) three-pointer with three seconds on the clock. Correll led all scorers with 12 points.
In the second half, Rowan was up by 16 points (55-39) when Cook made a layup at 13:42. The Profs led 68-46 with 5:58 remaining after forward Gary Foster’s (fr. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) basket. Aspril nailed a three (3:11) that made the score 70-57. Karanicolas hit a three-pointer for the Lions’ final basket at 1:36 then Cook was good for two free throws (1:17) and guard Allen Pritchett (jr. Camden, NJ/Woodbury) hit a jumper (:39) to end the game. Aspril totaled 14 points in the final period and Cook had 13.
Rowan travels to Kean University on Wednesday, January 7 for an 8 p.m. conference game.
