GLASSBORO, NJ – The College of New Jersey men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated Rowan University on Saturday to capture the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championships. The TCNJ men won 173-113 while the women had a 205-93 victory.
The Lion men have a 10-1 record and the women are 8-2 overall. Both teams are undefeated in the conference with a 4-0 mark. The Prof men are 6-3 on the season and 3-1 in the NJAC. The Prof women have a 3-5 record with a 3-1 conference mark.
It is the first time since the 1994-95 season that there has been enough men’s teams to have a conference championship. The TCNJ men have three NJAC titles (1994-95, 1993-94). The TCNJ women have earned nine NJAC titles with the last one in 2002-03 which was the last time there was a women’s conference.
The TCNJ men won the 400 medley relay (3:32.73) with Mike Molloy (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.), Myles O’Connor (jr. Santa Monica, CA/Home Schooled), Joe Tseng (so. East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) and Shawn Kircher (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.). The 400 freestyle relay took first in 3:14.10. The relay included Kevin Cain (fr. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit), Kircher, Tom Medvecky (so. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) and Mike Vernoia (fr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough).
Tim Ravch (so. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) tied for first place in the 1000 freestyle (10:09.70) and he won the 500 free (4:52.20). Eric Rohrs (jr. Congers, NY/Clarkstown High N.) won the 200 breaststroke (2:14.53) and was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.46). Thomas Nawrot (sr. East Brunswick/East Brunswick) took first in the 100 backstroke (52.38). O’Connor was the winner in the 100 breaststroke (57.91). Ryan Clark’s (fr. Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine) time of 22.19 was good for first place in the 50 freestyle. Herman Chu (jr. Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) won the 200 butterfly (1:59.22) and Tseng came in first in the 200 backstroke (1:57.61). Kircher had a first place in the 100 free (48.09). Medvecky finished first in the 100 butterfly (52.25) and he tied for first in the 1000 free (10:09.70). Vernoia was the winner in the 200 free (1:45.53).
In the diving, Rowan’s Nate McCarson (sr. Sewell, NJ/Clearview Reg.) took first in the three meter (236.35) and second in the one meter (243.60). Dave Bauer (sr. Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Twp.) was the winner on the one meter board (243.80). Bill Malone (fr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) came in second in the 50 (22.29) and 200 (1:48.31) freestyles. Jeff Terrell (fr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) finished second in the 500 freestyle (4:55.45). Dan Bower (fr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) had a second place in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.12).
Brian McDermott (so. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) came in second in the 200 backstroke (2:05.06). In the 200 butterfly, Kevin Wallace (sr. Somers Point, NJ/Lenape) was second (2:00.75) followed by Steve Tucker (jr. Pittsgrove, NJ/Sacred Heart) third (2:04.97). Josh Spivey (fr. Margate, NJ/Atlantic City) and Michael Brooks (so. Brigantine, NJ/Holy Spirit) were second (49.63) and third (50.33) respectively in the 100 freestyle. Jake Taylor (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) had third places in the 100 (1:02.30) and 200 (2:24.86) breaststrokes.
The TCNJ women finished first in the 400 medley (4:08.20) and 400 freestyle (3:45.38) relays. The medley relay consisted of Leah Varvaro (fr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.), Katie Morgan (so. Westfield, NJ/Westfield), Laura Pierce (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) and Traci Hofer (fr. Millville, NJ/Millville). Melissa Hessler (fr. Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra), Margaret Molloy (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.), Hofer and Pierce made up the free relay.
The Lion women had five individuals win two events. Molly took first place in the 1000 (10:36.81) and 500 (5:13.15) freestyles. Morgan had winning times of 1:09.18 and 2:29.19 in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes respectively. Hofer was also a double winner in the 200 (1:59.98) and 100 (54.86) freestyles. Pierce came in first in the 50 freestyle (25.23) and the 100 butterfly (1:00.44). Emily Ingram (fr. Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) won the one (227.60) and three (228.10) meter diving. Hessler was the winner in the 200 butterfly (2:12.91) and Brittany Collyer (jr. Forked River, NJ/Lacey Twp.) won the 200 individual medley (2:16.52).
For the Profs, Kate Winters (so. West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.) won the 200 backstroke (2:15.25) followed by Becky Goldberg (jr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) second (2:18.98). Winters was also second in the 100 backstroke (1:03.36) and Goldberg was third (1:05.35). Stacey Rahter (so. Somers Point, NJ/Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.) took second in the three events; the 100 (1:12.57) and 200 (2:33.47) breaststrokes and the 200 individual medley (2:19.97). Samantha Edwards (so. Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) came in second in the 200 freestyle (2:01.78) and 500 free (5:27.43). Alicia Mackleer (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) was second in the 100 freestyle (57.29).
Rowan travels to Division II Kutztown on Saturday, February 7 for a 1p.m. meet. It is the Profs’ last dual meet of the regular season.
