GLASSBORO, NJ – Forward Ashley Cieplicki scored 21 points to lead Rowan University over New Jersey City University, 76-65 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.
Cieplicki (sr. Haworth, NJ/Dumont) also grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds. She tied her career mark for points that was from last year against Richard Stockton College. Guard Gina Catanzariti (so. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) contributed with 12 points while forwards Jessica Nimbley (jr. Middletown, NJ/St. John Vianney) and Amanda Jennings (jr. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) added 11 points apiece. Guard Jean Jones (sr. Lawnside, NJ/Haddon Heights) was in double figures with 10 points. Guard Alissa Lamey (fr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) dished six assists.
Rowan has an overall record of 11-7 with a 5-4 NJAC mark. NJCU drops to 4-16 on the season and 1-8 in the conference. For the Gothic Knights, guard Lashawn Overton (fr. Jersey City, NJ/Snyder) scored 20 points and guard Carolina Garcia (jr. Plainfield, NJ/Franklin) followed with 17. Forward Patience Brown (fr. Plainfield, NJ/Union County Vo Tech) totaled 10 points. Forward Shayla Daniels (jr. Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) recorded a game-high 16 boards.
The Profs were ahead by six points (29-23) after the first half. NJCU tied the score at 36 with a layup by guard Tiffany Adams (jr. Jersey city, NJ/Dickinson) at 15:26 in the second period. Garcia nailed a three at 14:40 that put the Gothic Knights up 39-37. Catanzariti’s layup tied the score (39-39) at 14:32. The Profs then made nine straight points to lead 48-39 with 12:39 remaining. Catanzariti scored five points while Cieplicki and Nimbley each had two. Three times NJCU pulled within three points with the last one (56-53) coming at 4:52 after Daniel’s layup. With 2:15 left, Rowan had a nine point advantage (68-59) when Cieplicki made a basket and free throw. In the last 1:24 of the game, the Profs made eight of 10 foul shots. Catanzariti compiled five while Cieplicki made two and Lamey had one. Cieplicki ended the period with 15 points and Catanzariti added 12.
The score was tied seven times in the first half. The last tie was at 23 with 4:25 left to play. Jones hit a three-pointer tying it up for the Profs. Nimbley followed with a layup (3:00) and a foul shot (2:26) for a three point lead (26-23). Guard Lauren Creel (fr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) made a free throw (1:58) and Nimbley added two more (:08) for a six point advantage (29-23) at the intermission.
Next week, Rowan plays Rutgers-Camden at Gloucester County College on Wednesday, February 4 at 6 p.m.
