GLASSBORO, NJ – Four players scored in double figures to lead Rowan University to a 75-65 victory over visiting New Jersey City University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.
The Profs improve to 10-11 overall and 3-6 in the conference. The Gothic Knights have an 8-11 record with a 3-6 NJAC mark. Rowan was led by forward Tim Cook (jr. Willingboro, NJ/Glassboro) with 18 points and eight rebounds. Forward Tyson Hartnett (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and guard Dan Reddan (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) followed with 14 points apiece. Guard Billy Care (sr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) was also in double digits with 12 points. Guard Aaron Spellman (sr. Pine Hill, NJ/St. Joseph’s (Hammonton)) grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds.
For New Jersey City, forward Rashawn Smalls (fr. Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson) compiled 17 points and 10 boards. Forward Farrakhan Wells (fr. Newark, NJ/Westside) also had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Guard Kyle Ingram (sr. Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Twp.) made five three-pointers for 15 points.
In the first period, the score was tied (8-8) at 17:02. Smalls hit a jumper (16:32) and Wells converted an alley-oop (16:15) to put the Gothic Knights up by four (12-8). Rowan followed with a 10-0 run to take a six point lead (18-12) at 11:53. Hartnett recorded five of the 10 points. New Jersey City answered with a 14-0 surge of its own for an eight point advantage (26-18) with 7:26 on the clock. Ingram made two three-pointers. Wells’ layup at 6:11 made the score 28-21. Care connected on a layup (6:03) and Reddan nailed a three-pointer (4:46) to cut the deficit to two (28-26). Rowan was ahead 33-31 at the intermission after Spellman’s free throw with 24 seconds left. Hartnett posted 12 points in the first stanza, while Wells totaled eight points and six boards.
In the second half, Rowan went up 41-33 on a jumper by Care at 17:19. The Profs’ lead was down to three (43-40) after two foul shots by Wells at 13:17. Rowan reeled off 10 straight points for a 13 point lead (53-40) at 10:05. Reddan and Cook each had four points in the run. The closest New Jersey City came the rest of the way was seven points at 6:33 (57-50) and 5:48 (60-53).
Rowan plays conference opponent Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday, February 4 at Gloucester County College in Sewell, NJ at 8 p.m. New Jersey City travels to Lycoming College on Monday, February 2 for a 7 p.m. contest.
