GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University swimming and diving teams swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) meet against Montclair State University on Saturday. The men won 174-65 and the women had a 136.5-100.5 victory.

The Prof men are 6-2 overall and the women have a 3-4 record. Both teams are undefeated in the conference with a 3-0 NJAC mark. The Red Hawk men are 3-6 overall and 0-2 in the conference while the women have a record of 3-7 overall and 0-2 in the NJAC.

Rowan’s men’s team took first place in the 200 medley (1:40.72) and the 200 freestyle (1:30.39) relays. The medley relay included Matt Marzolf (fr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), Dan Bower (fr. Sewell, NJWashington Twp.), Kevin Wallace (sr. Somers Point, NJ/Lenape) and Matt Bocian (jr. Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston). Bill Malone (fr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), Ryan McNally (so. Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown), Steve Tucker (jr. Pittsgrove, NJ/Sacred Heart) and Josh Spivey (fr. Margate, NJ/Atlantic City) made up the free relay.

Malone, Wallace and Soto each won two individual events. Malone had a winning time of 22.62 in the 50 freestyle and 5:06.22 in the 500 free. Wallace finished first in the 200 individual medley (IM) (2:02.13) and the 100 freestyle (49.11). Soto was the winner in the 1000 freestyle (10:36.21) and the 100 butterfly (54.37). Jake Taylor (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.72).

In the 200 freestyle, Spivey came in first (1:48.98) followed by Michael Brooks (so. Brigantine, NJ/Holy Spirit) second (1:51.67) and Kevin Sheridan (fr. E. Brunswick, NJ/E. Brunswick) third (1:54.06). Spivey also had a second place in the 100 free (49.28). Marzolf finished second in the 100 backstroke (56.46) and Bower took second in the 200 IM (2:07.39). Brian McDermott (so. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) was second in the 500 freestyle (5:15.29) and third in the 200 IM (2:07.69). In the 100 butterfly, Tucker and McNally finished second (55.73) and third (58.15) respectively.

For MSU, Ben Goodyear (fr. Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) was the winner in the 100 backstroke (56.16). John Adams (sr. Wharton, NJ/Pope John XXIII) and Blaise Lacca (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) tied for second in the 50 freestyle. Both of them had a time of 23.02. Lacca also took third in the 100 freestyle (50.48). In the 1000 freestyle, Daniel Gordon (fr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) and Brian Iacono (fr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Twp.) were second (10:55.87) and third (11:05.50) respectively. Jon Kurtz (sr. Stockholm, NJ/Vernon Twp.) came in second in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.61) followed by Chris Lee (fr. Morris Plains, NJ/Parsippany) third (1:04.01).

In the one meter diving, Rowan’s Mark Balesteri (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) won the first event with 179.61 points. His teammates Nate McCarson (sr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and Dave Bauer (sr. Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Twp.) were second (160.05) and third (139.55) respectively. Balesteri also captured first in the second set of dives on the one meter board with 259.05 points. Rowan’s Zach Castelli (fr. Ventnor, NJ/Atlantic City) was second (235.70) followed by Bauer third (224.55).

In the women’s diving, the Profs’ Samantha Rottkamp (so. Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) won both one meter events. She totaled 165.05 in the first event and 207.80 in the second. The Red Hawks’ Jacklyn Beck took second place (109.15) in the first one meter diving while Laura Hess (so. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) was second (152.70) in the second set of dives.

Samantha Edwards (so. Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) paced the Rowan women with two first places in the individual events. She had winning times of 11:07.86 in the 1000 freestyle and 56.91 in the 100 free. Stacey Rahter (so. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.) won the 200 freestyle (2:03.14) and she came in second in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.98). Kate Winters (so. West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.) was the winner in the 500 freestyle (5:19.68). Anne O’Gorman (so. Boonton, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) won the 100 butterfly (1:03.49) and Steph McAllister (jr. Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) was second (1:05.39). In the 100 backstroke, Samantha King (jr. Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) was the winner (1:05.09) and Becky Goldberg (jr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) took second (1:06.50). Julie Furdyna (so. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) had second places in the 1000 (11:10.38) and 500 (5:30.82) freestyles. Lauren Hauser (jr. Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) tied for second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.63.

The Montclair State women won both of the relay events. The 200 medley relay (1:57.06) included Nicole Van Avery (fr. North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick), Laura Spadoni (so. Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area), Lauren Uckar (fr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) and Raquel Erwin (sr. Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood). Uckar, Alli Golden (fr. Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls), Christina Crossin (fr. Milford, CT/Lauralton Hall) and Erwin were on the freestyle relay.

Spadoni took first place in the 200 IM (2:22.00) and the 100 breaststroke (1:09.74). Erwin swam a winning time of 25.65 in the 50 freestyle and Van Avery tied for second (26.63). Van Avery also had a second place in the 100 freestyle (57.49). Kaitlin Muchler (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) came in second in the 200 freestyle (2:06.11).

Rowan will host conference opponent The College of New Jersey on Saturday, January 31 at 1 p.m. in the last home meet of the season.
