Rowan Splits Meet with Stevens Institute of Technology

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University swim teams split a meet against Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday. The Rowan men won 109-96 while the Stevens women had a 123-82 victory.

The Prof men are 5-2 overall and the women have a 2-4 record. The Duck men are 2-2 on the season and the women have a 3-1 mark.

Stevens took first place in the women’s 400 medley relay (4:14.74) and 400 freestyle relay (3:47.81). Gabrielle Czernick, Stephanie Miller, Emily Woo and Cailin Grunewald were on the medley relay. The free relay consisted of Laura Barito, Hayley Hatfield, Sarah Parker and Deanna Carrazza.

In the individual events, Rowan’s Samantha Edwards (so. Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) was the winner in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 18:44.03 and Julianne Furdyna (so. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) followed in second place (18:46.69). Edwards also took second in the 500 free in 5:29.67. Stacey Rahter (so. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.) won the 200 individual medley (2:15.68) and the 200 breaststroke (2:32.95). Kate Winters (so. West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.) had a first place in the 200 backstroke (2:13.62) and she took second in the 200 free (2:00.90). Ashley Gagnon (jr. South Amboy, NJ/Middlesex County Academy) was second in the 200 breaststroke (2:36.01). Anne O’Gorman (so. Boonton, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) finished third in the 200 butterfly (2:20.64).

The Ducks’ Sian Pearson was the winner in the 200 freestyle (1:59.25), 200 butterfly (2:13.70) and the 500 freestyle (5:13.17). In the 50 free, Barito came in first (25.24) followed by Hatfield second (26:06) and Carrazza third (26.73). Barito also won the 100 freestyle (55.09), Hatfield took second (56.56) and Grunewald was third (57.12). Woo had a second in the 200 individual medley (2:17.81) and Grunewald was third (2:19.55). Toni Diaz finished second in the 200 butterfly (2:16.50) while Mary Chew was second in the 200 backstroke (2:17.82).

Rowan was the winner in the men’s 400 medley relay in 3:41.15. The relay included Matt Marzolf (fr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), Jake Taylor (so. Millville, NJ/Millville), Kevin Wallace (sr. Somers Point, NJ/Lenape) and Josh Spivey (fr. Margate, NJ/Atlantic City). The Profs took first place in the 400 freestyle relay (3:14.96) with Bill Malone (fr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), Steve Tucker (jr. Pittsgrove, NJ/Sacred Heart), Wallace and Spivey.

Malone won the 200 (1:47.02) and 100 freestyles (48.95). Wallace had a winning time of 1:58.65 in the 200 butterfly. Dan Bower (fr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) took first in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.44). Jeff Terrell (fr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) came in second in the 1650 freestyle (17:35.23) and Mike Brooks (so. Brigantine, NJ/Holy Spirit) took third (18:02.63). Terrell was also third in the 500 freestyle (5:03.38). In the 50 freestyle, Tucker was second (22.69) while Matt Bocian (jr. Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) and Ryan McNally (so. Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) were third (22.97) and fourth (23.19) respectively. Brian McDermott (so. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) had a second place in the 200 individual medley (2:04.12) and Bower was third (2:05.16). In the 200 backstroke, McDermott and Marzolf finished second (2:02.71) and third (2:04.87) respectively. Taylor had a third place in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.03).

For Stevens, Evan Wilson won the 1650 (16:15.03) and 500 (4:56.56) freestyles. Wilson also took third in the 200 butterfly (2:04.04). Carl Nagle captured first in the 50 freestyle (22.10) and he was second in the 100 free (49.29). Matthew Smith came in first in the 200 individual medley (2:03.04) and second in the 200 butterfly (2:01.56) and 500 freestyle (4:59.42). Daniel Pecoraro finished first in the 200 backstroke (2:01.72) and second in the 200 freestyle (1:48.17).

Next week, Rowan hosts conference opponent Montclair State University on Saturday, January 24 at 1 p.m.
