HAVERFORD, PA – The Rowan University field hockey team opened the season with a 4-1 victory on the road against Haverford College on Saturday.
The Profs, ranked ninth, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half. Forward Kiley Graham (sr. Williamstown, NJ/Shawnee) started the scoring at 6:41 with a pass from forward Nicole Valianti (so. Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood). Valianti had the second goal at 32:54 with an assist from back Kacey Ehret (jr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood).
The Fords’ lone goal came at 39:38. Forward Jossi Ferri (fr. Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) scored and back Roxanne Jaffe (fr. State College, PA/State College) had the assist. Rowan followed with unassisted goals by forward Lauren Ross (so. Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester) and midfielder Julie Cairone (fr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) at 42:02 and 67:03 respectively.
Rowan compiled 32 shots while Haverford took six. In the Profs’ net, goalie Lisa Apt (fr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) made three saves in her collegiate debute. For the Fords (1-2), goalies Sarah Graves (sr. Wilmington, DE/Wilmington Friends) and Maggie Cronin (so. Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) each played a half. Graves stopped 11 shots in the first period and Cronin had 10 saves in the second.
Rowan is on the road again at Ursinus College on Wednesday, September 10 at 7 p.m.
