BRONX, NY – The Rowan University men and women’s cross country teams started the season at the Fordham Fiasco on Saturday. The meet was held at Van Cortlandt Park.
The Rowan men finished 12th in the team scoring with 301 points. Navy won the men’s team title (29 points) out of 16 schools that included 11 from Division I, one from Division II and four from Division III. The Rowan women took 14th place with 408 points out of 20 teams (13 Division I, two Division II, five Division III). Navy also captured the women’s team championship (26 points).
Mike Rivera (sr. Old Tappan, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) was the first Profs’ runner to cross the finish line. He completed the five mile course in 28:19.48. Second to score was Greg Kuczynski (sr. Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Mem.) in 36th place with a time of 28:21.05. Eric DuBois (fr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalik) and Dan Ratty (sr. Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) were 87th (29:42.05) and 89th (29:42.79) respectively. Brian Quilty (so. Brick, NJ/Saint Rose) came in 97th (30:03.37).
The top runner for the Rowan women was rookie Jena Peacock (fr. Williamstown, NJ/Our Lady of Mercy Academy). Peacock took 55th place and completed the 5,000 meters in 20:44.50. Alli Catenacci (so. Mullica Hill, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) finished 105th (21:37.82) and Michelle Esten (fr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) was 111th (21:40.79). Rounding out the scoring were Angela Patane (sr. Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.), 136th (22:14.95) and Eileen O’Mara (fr. Haddonfield, NJ/Haddon Twp.), 138th (22:20.24).
Next week, Rowan travels to the U.S. Naval Academy on Saturday, September 13 for an invitational starting at 10:30 a.m.
