GLASSBORO, NJ – The Salisbury University field hockey team defeated host Rowan University, 2-0 on Wednesday night.
The Sea Gulls had a 1-0 lead after the first half. Midfielder Kandice Hancock (so. Westover, MD/Washington) scored the goal on a penalty corner with a pass from back Tara McGovern (fr. Yorktown Heights, NY/Lakeland). It was Hancock’s fifth goal on the season.
In the final period, Rowan had a corner with 38 seconds left in the game. The Profs’ last shot hit the post and the Sea Gulls stormed back down the field. Forward Lauren Correll (jr. Bridgeville, DE/Sussex Tech) took the ball from midfield and she scored with a shot from the left side of the cage. Correll is Salisbury’s leading scorer with 16 points, seven goals and two assists.
Salisbury improves to 6-2 overall while Rowan has a 4-2 mark. In this week’s National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll, the Profs and the Sea Gulls were ranked seventh and ninth respectively.
For Salisbury, goalie Anna Cooke (so. Ann Arbor, MI/Ann Arbor Pioneer) made three saves for her second shutout. Rowan goalie Lisa Apt (fr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) stopped four shots. The Sea Gulls totaled 17 shots while the Profs had six.
Rowan travels to Montclair State University on Saturday, September 27 for a 5:30 p.m. conference game.
