MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Montclair State University men’s soccer team had a 3-1 conference win over Rowan University on Saturday.
The Red Hawks, ranked fifth in the nation, are undefeated with an 8-0 record while the Profs drop to 3-4 overall. It was the first New Jersey Athletic Conference game of the season for both teams.
MSU had a 1-0 lead after the first half. Forward Michael Cullen (jr. Clementon, NJ/Highland Reg.) scored the goal at 13:38 with a pass from midfielder Mike Krol (so. Howell, NJ/Howell). Midfielder John Esposito (jr. Hillside, NJ/Hillside) made the score 2-0 at 73:05 and back Brian Miles (sr. Newtown, CT/Newtown) had the assist.
Four minutes later, midfielder Jason Choma (jr. Belford, NJ/Middletown N.) had Rowan’s lone goal and midfielder Jay Vigilante (sr. Manasquan, NJ/Wall) picked up an assist. With only one second left in the game, forward Tyler Masterson (sr. Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) scored the third goal that was assisted by back Mike Vermes (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson).
Montclair State out shot Rowan, 18-5. In the Red Hawks’ net, goalie Nick Mele (sr. Delran, NJ/Delran) made one save. For the Profs, goalkeeper Joel Sanger (jr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) stopped eight shots.
