GLASSBORO, NJ –SUNY Cortland defeated Rowan University, 27-20 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.
Cortland improves to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Rowan has a 1-1 overall record and a 0-1 NJAC mark. It was the 71st victory for Cortland head coach Dan MacNeill, moving him into second place in school history.
The Red Dragons were led by tailback Andrew Giuliano (sr. Thornwood, NY/Westlake) with 136 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 29 carries. Quarterback Ray Miles (sr. Port Byron, NY/Port Byron) completed 12 of 20 passes for 220 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Anthony Giuliano (so. Thornwood, NJ/Westlake) had five receptions for 122 yards. Wide out Eric Hajnos (sr. Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) made four catches for 81 yards and one touchdown.
Linebacker Jim Smith (sr. Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) posted 11 tackles (7-4), 3.5 tackles for a loss (-30 yards), one sack (-14 yards) and one pass breakup. Defensive end Ben Nagle (sr. Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) followed with nine stops (4-5), including two tackles for a loss (-21 yards). Linebacker Josh Jablonski (gr. West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) added eight tackles (4-4), one tackle for a loss (-1 yard), one fumble recovery and one interception. Defensive back Chris Hanlon (so. Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) forced a fumble.
For the Profs, quarterback Frank Wilczynski (jr. Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) threw for 176 yards and one touchdown, completing 14 of 27 pass attempts. He also ran for 66 yards and two touchdowns on 17 touches. Wide receiver Davon Edwards (sr. Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Twp.) made four grabs for 76 yards and one touchdown. Wideout Marcus Lee (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) contributed with four catches for 55 yards.
Linebackers Drew Yezzi (jr. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) and Kevin Taylor (jr. Westwood, NJ/Westwood Reg.) made nine tackles (3-6) apiece. Linebacker Lafayette Crawford (so. Blackwood, NJ/Highland Reg.) compiled eight stops (2-6), while defensive end Matt Hoffman (so. Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) and cornerback Kenneth Quinones (sr. Dover, NJ/Dover) each had six (3-3). Hoffman had three tackles for a loss (-8 yards) and one sack (-5 yards). Safety Jimmy DiPaolo (sr. N. Plainfield, NJ/N. Plainfield) had one pick.
Cortland went ahead 7-0 at 4:16 in the first quarter when Andrew Giuliano broke free on a 39 yard touchdown scamper. He carried the ball two times for 19 yards and Miles connected with Hajnos on a 28 yard pass to set up the score.
Kicker Jeffrey Lang (sr. Dryden, NY/Dryden) added a 33 yard field goal with 40 seconds remaining to give the Red Dragons a 10-0 lead. Jablonski’s interception gave Cortland the ball on the Rowan 37 yard line. Andrew Giuliano ran the ball three times for 10 yards prior to the kick.
At 11:39 in the second period, Miles found Hajnos on a 29 yard touchdown strike to go up 17-0. The Red Dragons started at the 50 yard line and Miles completed a 17 yard pass to Anthony Giuliano. On Rowan’s next possession, Wilczynski carried the ball 13 yards into the end zone to bring the Profs within 10 (17-7) at the intermission. Wilczynski rushed for 32 yards in the drive, while superback Brett Scott (so. Bellmawr, NJ/Triton Reg.) had a 20 run.
Lang’s 20 yard field goal at 3:20 in the third made the score 20-7. Miles’ 81 yard pass to Anthony Giuliano got the Red Dragons into the Profs’ red zone. Andrew Giuliano tacked on a four yard touchdown carry at 1:27. Jablonski recovered a fumble to give the Red Dragons the ball on the Rowan eight yard line.
Rowan fought back with an eight yard touchdown run by Wilczynski at 10:59 in the fourth. The extra point attempt was blocked by defensive lineman Rich Rolo (sr. Yonkers, NY/Gorton). The Profs started on their own 49 yard line after stopping the Red Dragons on fourth and one. Edwards pulled in a 30 yard pass and Wilczynski added a 13 yard rush. Edwards had a 17 yard touchdown reception with 45 seconds left to play to make the score 27-20. Wilczynski had three carries for 39 yards prior to the touchdown. Cortland recovered the ensuing onside kick to hold on for the win.
Rowan hosts NJAC opponent William Paterson University on Saturday, September 27 at 1 p.m. Also on Saturday, Cortland travels to Kean University for a 1 p.m. NJAC contest.
