GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s soccer team defeated Medgar Evers College, 4-0 on Sunday to win the Harrison House Invitational.
Rowan and Ithaca College both went 2-0 in the tournament. The tiebreaker was goal differential, where the Profs held a 9-8 advantage over the Bombers. Earlier on Sunday, Ithaca had a 4-0 victory over Hunter College.
Rowan back Randy Kohr (so. Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Backs Eric Campesi (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) and Zack Zahrend (fr. Seaville, NJ/Ocean City) and forwards Dan Coviello (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and Dan Arnold (jr. Sicklerville, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) were selected to the All-Tournament Team. From Medgar Evers, backs Michael Plummer (jr. Brooklyn, NY/Heritage) and Nkosi Dick (jr. Brooklyn, NY/Bishops) collected All-Tournament honors.
Forward Dan Coviello (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and midfielder Phil Mora (fr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) each totaled one goal and one assist. Back Carmen Schiavo (jr. Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Twp.) and forward Dan Arnold (jr. Sicklerville, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) added one goal apiece. Forward Seho Park (fr. Ansan, Korea/Ansan) and midfielders Jake Dunn (so. Vineland, NJ/Sacred Heart) and Andrew Finger (sr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) all contributed with one assist.
Rowan out shot Medgar Evers, 13-7. In the Profs’ net, goalkeeper Joel Sanger (jr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) made three saves for his second shutout. Goalkeeper John Ajirotutu (jr. Brooklyn, NY/Canarsie) stopped four shots for the Cougars.
At 28:55 in the first half, Coviello found the net on a cross from Mora and Park to give the Profs a 1-0 lead. In the second period, Schiavo scored off a deflection at 51:56. Arnold kicked in a pass from Dunn at 63:30 and Mora knocked in a feed from Coviello and Finger at 82:39.
Rowan returns to action at the Mayor’s Cup Tournament on Friday-Saturday, September 5-6. On Friday, host SUNY Oneonta plays Susquehanna University at 1 p.m. followed by Rowan against Allegheny College at 4 p.m. On Saturday, the consolation game is at 1 p.m. and the championship is at 4 p.m.
