Rowan Tops Montclair State, 17-6 in NCAA First Round

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s lacrosse team defeated Montclair State,
17-6 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Wednesday night.

The Profs (13-4) advance to the regionals, Saturday-Sunday, May 10-11 at Salisbury University in Salisbury, MD. Rowan plays Catholic University (16-4) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Prior Salisbury University (20-0) meets St. Mary’s College (15-5) at 11:30 a.m. The two winners meet in the region final on Sunday at 1 p.m.

In the first round, Catholic won 18-7 over Christopher Newport University while St. Mary’s edged Fairleigh Dickinson, 16-15. Montclair State finishes the season with a 9-8 record. The Red Hawks received an automatic bid to the national tournament as the champion of the Skyline Conference. This is Rowan’s sixth appearance in the NCAAs.

Attack Caitlin Meseroll (sr. Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Twp.) led the Profs with four goals and one assist. Attacks Lauren Crennan (jr. Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) and Alayna Morris (so. Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington Reg.) and midfielder Carly Welsh (jr. Allenwood, NJ/Wall) each scored three goals. Midfielder Kelly Angstadt (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) contributed with two goals while midfielders Patricia Harrington (fr. Suffern, NY/Suffern) and Ali Goodman (fr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) added one apiece.

MSU had six different players that scored. Midfielder Marykate DiBenedetto (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) had one goal and assisted on two more. Attack Nicole Roselle (sr. Pine Brook, NJ/Montville) hit the net one time and had one assist. Midfielders Jennifer Tanis (sr. Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson Twp.), Bethany Blaine (sr. Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and Morgan MacPhee (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) and attack Lauren Adams (so. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) all had one goal.

Rowan totaled 35 shots while Montclair State took 15. Goalie Alicia Mannino (jr. Richboro, PA/Conwell-Eagan Catholic) stopped six shots for the Profs. Goalie Talia Katz (fr. Lower Merion, PA/Lower Merion) made seven saves for the Red Hawks.

The Profs started the game with five unanswered goals. Angstadt started the scoring with a free position goal at 9:02. Crennan recorded an unassisted goal at 12:30 and 21 seconds later Morris made the score 3-0. Meseroll (15:43) scored the fourth goal and Crennan (20:13) followed with the fifth. The Red Hawk’s first goal came at 21:41 on a free position by Blaine. Rowan answered with two more goals for a 7-1 advantage.
Meseroll found the net for the second time on a pass from Welsh at 24:47. Morris picked up her second goal on a free position with 3:16 remaining in the half. At the 54 second mark, Tanis had an unassisted goal for MSU.

In the final period, the two teams exchanged goals twice and Rowan led 9-4 at 40:41. The Profs then hit the Red Hawks’ net three straight times in a three minute span. Crennan (41:46), Goodman (44:12) and Meseroll (44:44) each scored a goal. Adams broke the run with a goal assisted by Roselle at 47:41. Rowan then pulled away with four more goals to lead 16-5 with 9:06 left. Meseroll and Harrington each had one while Welsh and Morris each hit the net with free position shots. DiBenedetto had the Red Hawks’ final goal (53:18) and Angstadt scored the last one of the game (56:29).
