OSHKOSH, WI – Rowan University’s Kyle Hayes finished seventh in the long jump at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday night. The national championships, May 22-24 are being held at J.J. Keller Field in Titan Stadium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Hayes (fr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt.Pleasant Boro) had a leap of 22’ 8” (6.91 meters) in the final and earned All-American honors. The top eight finishers are All-Americans. In the first round of flight two, he advanced to the final with 22’ 6.5” (6.87 meters). The long jump was won by Francis Nugent from the University of Redlands with 23’ 6.75” (7.18 meters).
Prior to the championships, Hayes had the second best distance among the 17 athletes that qualified for the long jump. He recorded the automatic of 24’ 0.75” (7.33 meters) at the New Balance NYC Qualifying Challenge (May 10). Twice Hayes had provisionals at the Wake Forest Invitational (Mar. 22), 23’ 4” (7.11 meters) and the Rowan Open (Apr. 11), 22’ 11.75” (7.0 meters).
This year, Hayes took first in the long jump at the NJAC Championships (May 3), 22’ 2.5” (6.77 meters), the CTC Championships (Apr. 20), 22’ 2.5” (6.77 meters), the Battleground Relays (Mar. 29), 21’ 8.25” (6.61 meters) and the Rowan Open (Apr. 11), 22’ 11.75” (7.0 meters). In addition, he had a measurement of 22’ 8” (6.91 meters) at the Penn Invitational (Apr. 5). The NCAA automatic in the long jump is 23’ 11.5” (7.30 meters) and the provisional is 22’ 10” (6.96 meters). Hayes was selected the NJAC Rookie of the Week three times. He also competed in the long jump at the 2008 NCAA Indoor Track Championships.
Sean Corey (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) will compete in the javelin throw on Saturday at 1 p.m. Corey has the top throw in Division III with 215’ 4” (65.65 meters) when he won the javelin at the Collegiate Track Conference (CTC) Championships (Apr. 19). Four times this season Corey has recorded automatic qualifying throws and he also had four provisional tosses. The NCAA automatic is 205’ 1” (62.50 meters) while the provisional is 188’ (57.30 meters).
Corey won the javelin at the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championships (May 3), 204’ 0.5” (62.19 meters); the Rowan Open (Apr. 11), 197’ 9” (60.27 meters); the Penn Invitational (Apr. 5), 195’ 6” (59.60 meters) and the Battleground Relays (Mar. 29), 195’ 8” (59.63 meters).
He had automatic throws at the Wake Forest Invitational (Mar. 21), 214’ 6.5” (65.39 meters); the Penn Relays (Apr. 26), 208’ 1” (63.43 meters) and the New Balance NYC Qualifying Challenge (May 10), 205’ 1” (62.52 meters). Corey was named the NJAC Field Athlete of the Week five times and the Eastern College Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week twice during the season.
