NEWARK, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team won 17-2 over Gwynedd-Mercy College in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament first round on Saturday. The double elimination first round is being held at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The second seed Rowan (32-13) plays the seventh seed Keystone College (32-11) in game 12 at 8:45 p.m. In the first game of the day, Keystone eliminated number five Messiah College (28-18) with a 9-3 victory. Rowan opened the NCAA tournament with a 14-9 win over Keystone on Wednesday night.
The top seed Kean University (37-9) meets the third seed The College of New Jersey (30-10) in game 11 at 5:50 p.m. On Sunday in game 13, the winner of game 12 faces the loser of game 11 at 11 a.m. The winner of games 11 and 13 play at 3 p.m. The if necessary game will be on Monday, May 19.
Right hander Anthony Cavalier (fr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) threw 6.1 innings for the victory. Cavalier (4-1) scattered seven hits and struck out 11 batters. Mike Swietanski (fr. Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford) pitched the final 2.2 innings. Pitcher Tim McMenamin (jr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) took the loss.
For the Profs, right fielder John McMullin (jr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) went two for five with a double, a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Shortstop Roland Rodriguez (so. Miami, FL/Miami Killian) contributed with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored. Third baseman Paul Urbanovich (sr. Rutherford, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep) totaled three hits in six at bats, one RBI and two runs scored.
Center fielder Garrett Mull (jr. Chatsworth, NJ/Lenape) added two hits (four at bats), one RBI and three runs scored. Catcher Dan Krause (sr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) recorded a two run homer. Designated hitter Roger Turley (sr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) went two for two with a double, two RBIs and one run scored. Left fielder Frank Hasenauer (sr. Iselin, NJ/John F. Kennedy) had a double and scored two runs.
Second baseman Nick Brown (fr. Yardley, PA/Notre Dame (NJ)) went two for two with one run scored for the Griffins. Third baseman Steve Sable (fr. Ivyland, PA/Holy Ghost) had one hit (four at bats) and one RBI. Center fielder Colin Tosti (fr. Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) contributed with one hit in two trips to the plate and one run scored.
After four scoreless innings, Rowan went up 5-0 with two runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth. Hasenauer led off with a double in the fifth and later scored on a fielder’s choice along with Rodriguez. In the sixth, Rodriguez tripled in two runs and he went home on second baseman Joe Franceschini’s (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) sacrifice fly.
The Profs led 9-0 with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. The Griffins’ two runs came in the bottom half. Urbanovich got on base with single and later scored on a wild pitch. Catcher Robert Fox (sr. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp.) plated McMullin with a single. Fox crossed the plate on an error and Rodriguez’s sac fly brought home Mull. Sable singled in Gwynedd-Mercy’s first run and Tosti scored on a wild pitch.
Rowan tacked on two more runs in the eighth and put the game out of reach with six in the ninth. In the eighth, McMullin recorded a two run homer to left center field. It was his seventh home run on the season. Turley doubled in two runs in the ninth. Left fielder Robert Rose (jr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) scored on a wild pitch. Mull had a RBI single and Krause blasted a two run shot over the left field fence.
