POMONA, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader over Richard Stockton College, 10-0 and 2-0 on Tuesday.
Rowan is 24-3 overall and 7-1 in the conference. Richard Stockton has a 17-7 record and a 2-6 NJAC mark.
In the first game, Rowan pitcher Jackie Sasko (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) threw a complete game. Sasko (14-1) only surrendered two hits and recorded eight strikeouts. Pitcher Kaitlyn Corica (so. Iselin, NJ/John F. Kennedy) suffered the loss for Richard Stockton.
Profs’ right fielder Heidi Smith (so. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) totaled three hits (four at bats), a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Sasko added two hits in three at bats and three RBIs. Center fielder Kristina Brenner (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) and shortstop Sarah Carangelo (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) tallied one RBI apiece. For the Ospreys, shortstop Samantha Horner (jr. Newfield, NJ/Buena Reg.) and second baseman Jaime Heller (jr. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) each had one hit.
Rowan got three runs in the top of the second inning. Smith drove in all three runs with a bases loaded double. In the fourth, Sasko hit a bases loaded single that brought home pinch runner Lauren Pashley (so. Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) and Smith. Third baseman Kristin Wallace (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.) came in on a passed ball. The Profs scored four runs in the seventh to seal the victory. Pinch runner Ashley Riegel (fr. Millville, NJ/Sacred Heart) scored on a sacrifice fly by Brenner and left fielder Casey Roselle (fr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) came home on an error. Sasko plated Smith with a single and Carangelo’s single brought in pinch hitter Kate Harman (so. Laurel Springs, NJ/Sterling).
In the nightcap, pitcher Brianna Seckinger (fr. Churchville, PA/Council Rock S.) went the distance for her first career shutout. Seckinger (4-0) only allowed one hit and struck out seven batters. Pitcher Danielle Accardi (fr. E. Brunswick, NJ/Mt. St. Mary) gave up two earned runs in the loss.
Brenner was two for three with one run scored. Wallace posted one hit (three at bats), a double and two RBIs. First baseman Jenna DiDonato (so. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) contributed with one hit in two trips to the plate, a double and one run scored. Left fielder Jessica Sneddon (so. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) had Richard Stockton’s lone hit.
Rowan scored both of its runs in the bottom of the third inning. DiDonato reached base with a double and she moved to third on a bunt single by Brenner. Wallace ripped a two run double plating DiDonato and Brenner.
Rowan hosts Ramapo College in a NJAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 12 at 1 p.m.
