Rowan Wins Two Games at New Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Rowan University softball team won two conference games at New Jersey City University, 7-1 and 9-1 (six innings) on Saturday.

Rowan, ranked 22nd in the nation, has an overall record of 22-3. The Profs have won four straight conference games and they are 5-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). New Jersey City University drops to 10-12 overall and 1-5 in the NJAC.

In the first game, right hander Jackie Sasko (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) pitched a complete game for the victory. Sasko (13-1) gave up four hits and she struck out 13 batters. At the plate, she was three for four with one RBI.

Right fielder Heidi Smith (so. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) contributed with two hits (four at bats), one RBI and two runs scored. Shortstop Sarah Carangelo (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) had a two run homer. Center fielder Kristina Brenner (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) totaled three hits in four trips to the plate. Catcher Stephanie Taraschi (so. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) and second baseman Lauren Navarro (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) each added one RBI.

NJCU first baseman Lacey Skowronski (so. Bayonne, NJ/Holy Family Academy) had one RBI. Second baseman Danielle Delfino (fr. Jersey City, NJ/County Prep), third baseman Christen Hall (so. East Rutherford, NJ/Becton Reg.), center fielder Tara Perrucci (so. Wallington, NJ/Wallington) and left fielder Stephanie Gomez (fr. Belleville, NJ/Belleville) each had one hit.

In the first inning, Rowan got on the scoreboard when Smith scored on a wild pitch. The Profs were ahead 5-0 after four runs in the fifth. Smith drove in one run with a single and Taraschi had a RBI single. Sasko singled in a run and Taraschi came home on Navarro’s double to left field.

The Gothic Knights’ lone run came in the sixth inning. Skowronski reached base on a fielder’s choice, scoring Gomez. Carangelo recorded her two run homer in the seventh. It was her first home run on the year.

Righty Amanda Riegel (sr. Millville, NJ/Sacred Heart) was the winning pitcher in the second game. Riegel (6-1) only allowed one hit in six innings. Smith went three for four with two doubles, a home run, one RBI and two runs scored. Carangelo compiled three hits (three at bats), two doubles, one RBI and one run scored. Navarro had three hits (four at bats), two RBIs, a double and scored two runs. First baseman Jenna DiDonato (so. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) and left fielder Casey Roselle (fr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) each had two hits and two RBIs.

The Profs scored their first run in the bottom of the first inning. Brenner came home on a single by third baseman Kristin Wallace (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.). The Gothic Knights tied the score in the second inning when first baseman Christina Prospero (so. Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) crossed the plate on an error. Prospero had gotten on base with a walk.

Rowan went up 2-1 in the third inning. Smith posted a double and scored on Carangelo’s double. Roselle recorded a two run homer to left field in the fourth inning that made the score 4-1. The Profs ended the game in the sixth with five runs because of the eight run rule. Smith led off with a home run. It was her second homer on the season. Navarro and DiDonato each doubled in two runs.

Rowan travels to Richard Stockton College on Tuesday, April 8 for a conference doubleheader at 3 p.m.
