GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team split a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader against William Paterson University on Saturday. Rowan had a 5-0 shutout in the first game while William Paterson won the second, 12-5.
Rowan is 16-7 overall and 3-4 in the conference. William Paterson has a 14-8 record and a 4-2 NJAC mark.
Left hander Ryan Kulik (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) pitched a complete game for his first shutout of the season. Kulik (5-2) only allowed one hit and recorded 12 strikeouts. Lefty Chris Mongelli (fr. Riverdale, NJ/Pompton Lakes) went the distance on the mound for the Pioneers. Mongelli
(2-2) gave up four earned runs.
Rowan center fielder Garrett Mull (jr. Chatsworth, NJ/Lenape) went three for three with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Shortstop Roland Rodriguez (so. Miami, FL/Miami Killian) added two hits (four at bats), one run scored and one RBI. Second baseman Joe Franceschini (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) had one hit (four at bats), a double and one RBI. Third baseman Paul Urbanovich (sr. Rutherford, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep) contributed with one hit in two trips to the plate and two runs scored. Left fielder Frank Hasenauer (sr. Iselin, NJ/John F. Kennedy) drove in one run. For William Paterson, shortstop Dan Limone (sr. Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) had the only hit.
Rowan went up 1-0 in the bottom of the third. Mull reached base with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Hasenauer. Rodriguez’s single to right field scored Mull. The Profs had two more runs, one in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, Mull brought Urbanovich in with a single through the left side. Franceschini hit a double to left field in the seventh inning, plating Rodriguez. The Profs tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth. Urbanovich came home on a single by Mull and Hasenauer’s sacrifice fly scored Mull.
Right hander Dan VandeVrede (jr. Lincoln Park, NJ/Pequannock) got the win on the mound in the second game. VandeVrede (3-1) went seven innings and Steve VandeVrede (sr. Lincoln Park, NJ/Pequannock) pitched the last two.
Right fielder Mike Guadango (so. Upper Saddle River, NJ/Northern Highlands) led the Pioneers with two hits (four at bats), a double, four RBIs and one run scored. Limone went three for five with two RBIs and three runs scored. Designated hitter Derek Koppinger (jr.. Columbia, NJ/N. Warren Reg.) contributed with two hits in four at bats, two RBIs and three runs scored.
For Rowan, first baseman Tom Ready (jr. Blenheim, NJ/Triton Reg.) went three for five with a double, two RBIs and one run scored. Right fielder John McMullin (jr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) had three hits (five at bats), a double and two RBIs.
The Pioneers were ahead 3-2 after the third inning. Guadango’s sacrifice fly scored Limone in the first inning. Limone crossed the plate on a double by Guadango in the third, who later went home on an error. The Profs came back with two runs in the bottom of the third. Hasenauer came home on a ground out and McMullin recorded a RBI double.
William Paterson led 9-2 after four runs in the fourth inning and two in the sixth. Limone had a RBI single in the fourth and third baseman Scott Fischer (fr. Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Pascack Hills) doubled in a run. Guadango drove in two runs with a single. In the sixth, Koppinger crossed the plate on an error and catcher Vince Joyce (sr. Franklin, NJ/Wallkill Valley) had a RBI single. Rowan had three runs in the seventh inning and William Paterson added three more runs in the ninth.
Rowan travels to Rutgers-Camden for a NJAC game on Monday, April 7 at 3:30 p.m.
