WAYNE, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept William Paterson University in a conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. Rowan won the first game, 10-1 and the second 4-1.

The Profs are 20-3 overall and 3-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). William Paterson has an 11-7 record with a 2-2 NJAC mark.

In the opener, pitcher Jackie Sasko (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) gave up five hits and had six strikeouts for the victory. Sasko also went two for four with one RBI and two runs scored. Third baseman Kristin Wallace (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.) had two hits (four at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Catcher Stephanie Taraschi (so. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) scored three runs and had one RBI. Second baseman Lauren Navarro (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) contributed with three hits (four at bats) and left fielder Amanda Brown (sr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) added two RBIs.

For William Paterson, second baseman Lindsey Nadolny (fr. Belford, NJ/Middletown N.) went two for four with one RBI. Pitcher Diana Scharer (sr. Paramus, NJ/Paramus) suffered the loss.

The score was tied at one after two innings. Rowan went up 4-1 with three runs in the third. Wallace singled in the first run and right fielder Heidi Smith (so. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) scored on a fielder’s choice. Brown had a RBI single. The Profs added on three more runs in the fourth. Smith came home on Sasko’s sacrifice fly. Shortstop Sarah Carangelo (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) singled in Wallace and Taraschi crossed the plate on a wild pitch. The Profs had one more run in the sixth inning and two in the seventh.

In the second game, Sasko scattered five hits and struck out seven batters for her 12th win. Carangelo went two for three with two RBIs. Smith contributed with two hits (four at bats) and one run scored. Wallace had two hits in three trips to the plate and scored two runs.

Pioneers’ left fielder Katelyn Braun (so. Philadelphia, PA/Gloucester Catholic) was two for three with one RBI. Nadolny had two hits (three at bats) and one run scored. Pitcher Jenna Vitale (fr. Kenilworth, NJ/David Brearley) took the loss. Vitale (2-3) gave up four earned runs.

William Paterson went up 1-0 in the first inning. Rowan tied it with one run in the second and went ahead 2-1 in the third. First baseman Jenna DiDonato (so. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) singled in Navarro for the tying run. Carangelo’s single to left brought home Wallace.


The Profs sealed the victory with two runs in the fifth. Smith scored on a sac fly by Sasko. Carangelo singled in Wallace.

Rowan is on the road again at New Jersey City University on Saturday, April 6 for a 1 p.m. conference doubleheader.
