TCNJ Beats Rowan, 18-8 in Regular Season Finale

EWING, NJ – Midfielder Toni-Anne Cavallo scored five goals to lead third ranked The College of New Jersey to an 18-8 victory over Rowan University on Thursday.

The College of New Jersey has a 13-1 record, while Rowan finishes the regular season at 12-4. Lions’ attack Lisa Seldeen (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) tallied four goals and two assists. Attack Diane Haddeland (sr. Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) added three goals and one assist. Midfielders Alison Jaegar (fr. Hampton, NJ/North Hunterdon) and Katie Reuther (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.) contributed with two goals apiece. Midfielder Leigh Mitchell (fr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and defender Kelly Mitchell (jr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) each found the net once, while defender Tara Klein (jr. Ocean, NJ/Ocean Twp.) and midfielder Rachel Gordon (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) both had one assist.

For Rowan, attack Lauren Crennan (jr. Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) scored three goals. Midfielder Caitlin Meseroll (sr. Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Twp.) chipped in with two goals and one assist. Midfielders Ali Goodman (fr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), Carly Welsh (jr. Allenwood, NJ/Wall) and Nicole Valianti (fr. Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood) had one goal apiece.

The Lions out shot the Profs, 45-22. TCNJ goalie Caitlin Gregory (sr. Winslow, NJ/Eastern Reg.) made eight saves. Goalie Alicia Mannino (jr. Richboro, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) turned away 19 shots for Rowan.

TCNJ went up 3-0 following a goal by Kelly Mitchell (6:07) and two by Seldeen (7:31 and 8:24). Meseroll found the net at 9:52 to cut the deficit to two (3-1). Seldeen had her third goal at 13:52, but Welsh countered with a goal at 14:57. Cavallo and Jaeger scored back-to-back goals to give the Lions a 6-2 lead. Meseroll had her second goal at 26:06. TCNJ closed out the half with three goals, one each from Reuther (27:48), Jaeger (28:56) and Seldeen (29:21) for a 9-3 halftime advantage.

In the second period, Valianti found the net at 31:45 to make the score 9-4. TCNJ got one goal from Haddeland and two from Cavallo to go up 12-4 at 36:43. Crennan had a goal for the Profs at 39:12. Cavallo (39:49) and Haddeland (41:29) both had a goal to make the score 14-5. The two teams exchanged goals then Goodman and Crennan scored to cut the lead to 15-8 at 53:52. The Lions closed out the game with three straight goals from Leigh Mitchell, Haddeland and Reuther.

Rowan has to wait until Monday, May 5 to see if it receives an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
