GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team defeated New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent Rutgers-Camden, 4-2 and 10-1 in five innings on Tuesday.
In the opener, right hander Jackie Sasko (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) pitched a complete game for the win. Sasko (18-2) scattered four hits and struck out seven batters. Righty Natalie Powell (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) took the loss on the mound.
For the Profs, right fielder Heidi Smith (so. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) went two for four with a double and one RBI. Third baseman Kristin Wallace (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.) had two hits in four at bats. First baseman Jenna DiDonato (so. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) and left fielder Casey Roselle (fr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) each contributed with one RBI.
Center fielder Stephanie Klotz (so. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) led the Scarlet Raptors with two hits in two trips to the plate. Second baseman Brooke Keenan (fr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and designated player Krista White (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) each scored one run.
Rowan went up 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Smith drove in the first run with a single and center fielder Kristina Brenner (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) scored on an error. Brenner reached base with a single. Rutgers-Camden tied the score in the third inning. White came home on an error after Keenan attempted to steal second. Keenan later crossed the plate on an error. The Profs took the lead with two runs in the bottom half. DiDonato had a RBI single and scored on a triple to center field by Roselle.
Rookie Brianna Seckinger (fr. Churchville, PA/Council Rock S.) was the winning pitcher in the second game. Seckinger (6-0) went four innings and only gave up two hits. Roselle was two for two with a double, triple, five RBIs and one run scored. Catcher Stephanie Taraschi (so. Mt. Ephriam, NJ/Audubon) contributed with two hits (three at bats), one RBI and two runs scored. Designated player Loren Pashley (so. Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) scored two runs while pinch hitter Melanie Sura (jr. Linden, NJ/Linden) drove in two runs.
Both teams scored one run in the first inning. Wallace singled in Rowan’s run while Klotz came home on an error for Rutgers-Camden. The Profs took the lead 5-1 with four runs in the fourth. Sura and Roselle recorded back-to-back two RBI doubles. Rowan tacked on five more runs in the fifth which ended the game because of the eight run rule. Taraschi singled in the first run and Roselle recorded a three run triple. Roselle scored on a wild pitch.
The Profs are 30-5 overall and 13-3 in the conference. The Scarlet Raptors drop to 5-27-1 on the season and 1-15 in the NJAC. Rowan hosts Swarthmore College in a single game on Thursday, April 24 at 4 p.m. while Rutgers-Camden travels to Hunter College for a 4 p.m. nonconference doubleheader.
