GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA – Catcher Dan Krause’s three run double in the 11th inning gave Rowan University an 8-6 win over Gwynedd-Mercy College on Wednesday.
The game was tied at five after nine innings. After a scoreless 10th, Rowan right fielder John McMullin (jr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) led off the 11th with a single. Designated hitter Tom Ready (jr. Blenheim, NJ/Triton Reg.) reached base on a sacrifice bunt and McMullin went to second on an error by the pitcher. Third baseman Paul Urbanovich (sr. Rutherford, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep) recorded a bunt single to load the bases. Krause (sr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) doubled to center field, plating McMullin, Ready and Urbanovich. Gwynedd-Mercy scored one run in the bottom half on center fielder Colin Tosti’s (fr. Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) RBI single.
Rowan improves to 14-6, while Gwynedd-Mercy has a 6-14 record. Right hander Kevin O’Hara (jr. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) picked up his sixth victory of the season in relief. He threw the final 1.2 innings, allowing one earned run on one hit and striking out five batters. Right hander Miguel Sosa (sr. Miami, FL/Barbara Goleman) started for the Profs. Sosa went 5.2 innings, surrendering six hits and one earned run. Righty Kyle Reynolds (sr. Darby, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) took the loss for the Griffins. He pitched three innings and gave up two earned runs.
Krause finished the game with three hits (six at bats), three RBIs, one run scored and a double. Second baseman Joe Franceschini (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) went three for four with two RBIs, one run scored and a double. Urbanovich scored three times, while center fielder Keith Evans (so. Audubon, NJ/Audubon), pinch hitter Robert Fox (sr. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp.) and Ready each drove in a run.
For the Griffins, Tosti had two hits (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Designated hitter Tim McMenamin (jr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) added one hit (three at bats), one run scored, one RBI and a double. Second baseman Mike Albert (fr. Levittown, PA/Pennsbury) was one for three with two RBIs. Shortstop Scott Carroll (so. Churchville, PA/Council Rock S.) contributed with one hit (three at bats), one RBI and one run scored.
Rowan went up 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Franceschini came home on a ground out by Ready. The Profs added a run in the top of the fourth, when Evan’s sacrifice fly plated Urbanovich. Gwynedd-Mercy got on the scoreboard in the bottom half after Albert singled in McMenamin.
The Griffins took at 3-2 lead in the fifth. Carroll scored on a ground out and McMenamin’s double brought home Tosti. Rowan got three runs in the top of sixth for a 5-3 advantage. Urbanovich came in on Fox’s sacrifice fly and Franceschini hit a two run single that plated Evans and Krause. Gwynedd-Mercy added two runs in the bottom half to tie the game (5-5). Right fielder Dan Strack (so. Langhorne, PA/Holy Ghost) scored on an error and pinch runner Nick Brown (fr. Yardley, PA/Notre Dame (NJ)) had the second run on a fielder’s choice by Carroll.
Rowan returns to its New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) schedule at Ramapo College on Thursday, April 3 at 3:30 p.m.
