Rowan Defeats The College of New Jersey, 9-5 in 10 innings

EWING, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team defeated seventh ranked The College of New Jersey, 9-5 in 10 innings on Thursday afternoon.

In the top of the 10th inning, Rowan scored four runs for the victory. Third baseman Paul Urbanovich (sr. Rutherford, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep) doubled in a run and later scored on error. Center fielder Garrett Mull (jr. Chatsworth, NJ/Lenape) recorded a two RBI triple that drove in right fielder John McMullin (jr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and catcher Robert Fox (sr. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp.).

Right hander Todd Burdette (fr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) pitched three innings of relief for the win. Burdette (1-0) did not give up a hit or a run. Starter Ryan Kulik (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) went six innings and had six strikeouts.

McMullin led Rowan with two hits (five at bats), a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Mull went two for three with two RBIs and Fox contributed with two hits (five at bats), one RBI and two runs scored. Second baseman Joe Franceschini (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) scored two runs.

For TCNJ, catcher Rich Gawlak (sr. Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.) had one hit (five at bats) and two RBIs. First baseman Bill Kropp (sr. Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) and left fielder Chris Esperon (so. Union, NJ/Union Catholic) each chipped in with two hits. Right fielder Matt Barrett (sr. Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) added one RBI and scored one run. Pitcher Eric Gertie (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) suffered the loss.

The Profs trailed 3-1 going into the sixth inning. McMullin recorded a three run homer to left field and Fox singled in a run. It was McMullin's fourth home run on the season. The Lions tied the score at five in the bottom half. Barrett crossed the plate on an out and pinch runner Elliot Stein (fr. Middletown, DE/Middletown) scored on an error.

Both teams got on the scoreboard with one run in the second inning. Fox came home on an error for Rowan’s run while Barrett walked with the bases loaded for TCNJ. In the fifth, the Lions had two runs for a 3-1 advantage. Gawlak singled in both of the runs.

Rowan hosts Rutgers-Newark in a conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 19 at noon.
