GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team won two games over conference opponent The College of New Jersey, 6-0 and 11-2 in eight innings.
In the first game, right hander Jackie Sasko (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) pitched a complete game for her seventh shutout on the season. Sasko only allowed four hits and struck out five batters. Second baseman Lauren Navarro (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) totaled three hits in three at bats, a double, one RBI and one run scored. Center fielder Kristina Brenner (jr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) contributed with three hits (three at bats), one RBI and two runs scored. Right fielder Heidi Smith (so. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) went one for three with a double, two RBIs and one run scored.
For TCNJ, center fielder Danielle Hagel (so. Egg Harbor City, NJ/Oakcrest), shortstop Ellen Seavers (so. Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood), catcher Kelly Armstrong (jr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) and designated player Camille Heller (jr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) each had one hit. Ashley Minervini (so. Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park) suffered the loss on the mound. Minervini (9-7) gave up eight hits and recorded seven strikeouts.
Rowan went up 3-0 after scoring one run in the first, second and third innings. In the first, Brenner crossed the plate on an error. Navarro came home on an error in the second inning and she drove in Sasko with a single in the third. The Profs tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning. Brenner’s single scored the first run and she was doubled in by Smith. Third baseman Kristin Wallace (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.) reached base on an error, scoring Smith.
In the second contest, the score was tied at two after seven innings. Rowan recorded nine runs in the top of the eighth. Sasko had a RBI double. Catcher Stephanie Taraschi (so. Mt. Ephriam, NJ/Audubon) and left fielder Casey Roselle (fr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) hit back-to-back triples. Taraschi knocked in two runs and Roselle had one RBI. Roselle crossed home plate on a wild pitch. Wallace blasted a shot over the left field fence for a grand slam home run.
Sasko went two for five with one RBI and one run scored. She pitched three innings of relief for the win on the mound. Sasko (16-2) gave up two hits and had three strikeouts. Navarro contributed with two hits (four at bats), a double and two RBIs. Taraschi added two hits in three at bats, two RBIs and one run scored.
Seavers went two for four with one RBI. Heller had two hits in three at bats, a double and one RBI. Pitcher Alex Sietsma (fr. Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) added two hits (three at bats) while right fielder Colleen Cawley (fr. Riverton, NJ/Holy Cross) and second baseman Kathy Sikora (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) each scored a run.
TCNJ got on the scoreboard first with Seavers’ RBI single in the third inning. Rowan tied the game in the top of the fourth. Navarro doubled in pinch runner Loren Pashley (so. Blue Bell, NJ/Wissahickon). The Lions went up 2-1 in the bottom half when Cawley came home on Heller’s double. The Profs tied the game in the sixth when Navarro singled in pinch hitter Melanie Sura (jr. Linden, NJ/Linden) who had a triple to right center field.
The Profs are 26-5 overall and 9-3 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Lions have an
18-14 record with a 6-6 conference mark. Rowan travels to Rutgers-Newark on Saturday, April 19 for a conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
