GLASSBORO, NJ – The Ramapo College softball team swept conference opponent Rowan University 2-1 and 5-4 on Saturday.
The Roadrunners are 21-7 overall and 7-3 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Profs have a 24-5 record with a 7-3 conference mark. In this week’s National Fastpitch Coaches Association Poll, Ramapo was ranked 11th while Rowan was tied for 21st.
In the first game, Ramapo scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning for the victory. With two outs, designated player Amanda Sansevere (jr. West Keansburg, NJ/Raritan) doubled to left center field, scoring catcher Kelly Schriber (jr. Montclair, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic) and first baseman Marilee Farmer (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.). Schriber led off with a double and Farmer reached base on a fielder’s choice.
Right hander Katie Norton (sr. Livingston, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic) pitched a complete game. Norton (6-3) scattered five hits and gave up one earned run. Third baseman Lauren Cascino (sr. New Windsor, NJ/Cornwall Central) went two for three with a double.
For Rowan, right fielder Heidi Smith (so. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) went two for four with one run scored. Third baseman Kristin Wallace (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.) contributed with two hits (four at bats) and catcher Stephanie Taraschi (so. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) drove in one run. Pitcher Jackie Sasko (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) suffered the loss on the mound. Sasko (14-2) gave up five hits and struck out seven batters.
The Profs scored one run in the sixth. Smith singled to start the inning and she later scored on a fielder choice with Taraschi at the plate.
Rookie Deanna Giordano (fr. Clifton, NJ/Clifton) was the winning pitcher in the second contest. Giordano (5-1) threw a complete game and did not give up a run until the seventh inning. Farmer led the Roadrunners with two hits (three at bats), a double and three RBIs. Schriber went two for three with a double, one RBI and one run scored. Right fielder Brittney McKeon (fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.) had two hits in four trips to the plate and scored three runs.
Smith went one for four with two RBIs. Left fielder Casey Roselle (fr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) and first baseman Jenna DiDonato (so. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) each contributed with one RBI. Taraschi had two hits in three at bats.
Ramapo was ahead 4-0 going into the top of the seventh inning. Rowan scored four runs to tie the score. Roselle singled in pinch runner Loren Pashley (so. Blue Bell, NJ/Wissahickon) for the first run. DiDonato followed with a RBI single and Smith drove in two runs with a single.
Schriber doubled in the winning run in the bottom half. She brought home McKeon who got on base with a fielder’s choice. Ramapo went up 3-0 in the first inning on Farmer’s three RBI double. In the fifth, the Roadrunners scored one run for a 4-0 advantage. McKeon doubled and scored on an error.
