Rowan Takes Two Over New Jersey City, 7-4 and 13-4

JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader over New Jersey City University, 7-4 and 13-4 on Saturday.

Rowan improves to 21-8 overall and 7-4 in the conference. New Jersey City has a 9-20 record and a 1-9 NJAC mark. Left hander Joe Cichy (sr. Vineland, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) got the win the first game. Cichy (3-2) pitched eight scoreless innings, scattering six hits and striking out 12 batters. Righty Kevin O’Hara (jr. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) tossed the final 0.1 innings for his fourth save. Right hander Baldwin Vargas (sr. New York, NY/Alfred Smith (NY)) took the loss for the Gothic Knights. Vargas (0-2) went seven innings, giving up six runs.

Rowan was led by first baseman Tom Ready (jr. Blenheim, NJ/Triton Reg.) with two hits (four at bats) and two runs scored. Third baseman Paul Urbanovich (sr. Rutherford, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep) and left fielder Tom Reindel (jr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) both went one for five with a double and one run scored. Reindel drove in two runs, while Urbanovich had one RBI.

For New Jersey City, catcher Alex Mena (so. North Bergen, NJ/Hudson Catholic) had two hits in four trips to the plate and a triple. Outfielder Mark Hoyer (jr. Irvine, CA/Woodbridge (CA)) recorded three hits (four at bats) and one run scored.

Rowan went up 1-0 in the top of the third inning when center fielder Frank Hasenauer (sr. Iselin, NJ/John F. Kennedy) came home on a sacrifice fly by Urbanovich. In the sixth, Reindel doubled in Ready and catcher Robert Fox (sr. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp.) knocked in Reindel with a sacrifice fly. The Profs added three runs in the seventh. Second baseman Joe Franceschini (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) scored on a balk. Right fielder John McMullin (jr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) had a sacrifice fly that scored Urbanovich. Ready came home on a fielder’s choice by Reindel. In the ninth, pinch hitter David Lenig (so. Pennsgrove, NJ/Pennsgrove) hit a sacrifice fly that scored Fox. New Jersey City scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the ninth.

In the nightcap, right hander Anthony Cavalier (fr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) tossed eight innings, allowing four runs and striking out seven. Cavalier improves to 3-0 on the year. O’Hara pitched the final inning and recorded three strikeouts. Righty Jose Sotomayor (sr. Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) suffered the loss (1-4).

Ready went three for four with a double, a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Shortstop Roland Rodriguez (so. Miami, FL/Miami Killian) contributed with two hits (four at bats), two doubles, one run scored and one RBI. Center fielder Garrett Mull (jr. Chatsworth, NJ/Lenape) was one for five with a double and one RBI.

Outfielder Rob Sumner (sr. Union, NJ/Union) posted two hits in three at bats, a double, a triple, one RBI and two runs scored for the Gothic Knights. Outfielder Anthony Mackow (sr. Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) chipped in with one hit (two at bats), a triple, one RBI and two runs scored.

Rowan went ahead 3-0 after scoring two runs in the second inning and one in the third. Hasenauer singled in Fox and Rodriguez’s double plated Hasenauer in the second. Ready hit a solo homer in the third. New Jersey cut the lead to 3-1 with one run in the fourth. Rowan answered with four runs in the top of the fifth. Ready drove in Franceschini and Urbanovich with a double and designated hitter Dan Krause’s (sr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) single brought in Fox and Ready. The Gothic Knights got two runs in the bottom half to make the score 7-3. The Profs recorded six runs in the top of the eighth. Urbanovich singled in Rodriguez, Franceschini came home on pinch hitter Roger Turley’s (sr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) single and McMullin’s single plated Urbanovich. Turley crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Fox and Krause scored on a double by Mull. New Jersey City added a run in the bottom half.

Rowan hosts Widener University on Wednesday, April 16 at 3:30 p.m.
